I like Bethesda but...

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 10:41 am

... why are they the only company making decent RPG's for the PS3? I didn't like Dragon's Age, told me what to do too much. I like sandbox games and with the exception of the GTA Series (not RPG though) the rest is all FPS and sports games. When I bought my PS3 I bought it because 1) I had a PS1 and PS2 and 2) I liked the controller.

I get jealous when I listen to PC gamers talking about the joys of WoW or Xbox owners talking about Fable 3. Looking at my gameshelf the now, Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout NV and GTA IV are the only games that I would say I 'love', I dont really care for the other games. They're good but not great.

Are there any other great RPG's out on the PS3 that I dont know about? Please let me know if there are. With all the success that Fallout 3 and Skyrim has had, making loads of money for Bethesda, why are there not loads more companies out there making RPG's for the PS3? Why do they make only for the PC? Is it because it's too hard for them? Does Bethesda know somethinb about makinb RPG's that other companies dont? Kind of like the secret recipe for coca-cola?

I know PC's are more powerful than the PS3, but if Bethesda can make Fallout 3, Oblivion and Skyrim then why dont others? I am fed up of all the COD and games like that getting all the releases all the time. My friend loves FPS and he has millions of FPS games to choose from. I have 5 and I own all of them. boo hoo. waaah.

I'm not going to buy a PC because I cant afford it and anytime I buy a new one they always end up getting a virus and get thrown out. A quality Star Trek, Star Wars or LOTR game of Bethesda quality with true sandbox playability on the PS3 would be EPIC. They've tried these franchises but they're not Elder Scrolls style, always crappy platform/FPS/action adventure nonsensd.

I dont know why more companies dont copy Bethesda and make quality RPG's for the PS3. Is it because they dont know how? Don't have the talent? They would make sooooo much money. I know the PS3 isn't as technologically powerful as a PC, but I would be more than happy with the PS3's Oblivion graphics and map size.

PS3 is the JRPG haven man. Just that.

If you want western RPGs, PC or Xbox man.

Apart from the DS, the PS3 is the best current-gen console for RPGs.

I would call it more like the evolution of pacman. (Not exaggerating)

Because Rpg's are far more difficult to make. There are many things to consider when creating games like this. You look at Fps there are only a handful of different things you can do now, in a game like skyrim the development of a single town is more demanding than an entire fps. Also the length of development I believe skyrim was in development for about 3-5 years most games can be made in a year but bethesda really does a heck of a job giving us content (which most company's would charge as dlc)

But ultimately it comes down to rpg's being less profitable when you consider all the work you put in to it.

I also feel I should note considering you a fellow ps3 player. Games are far more difficult to make on the ps3 yes it's more powerful than the 360 but there's very little point to making exclusives when the sale could easily be quadrupled by making it multiplatform.

Bethesda is easily my favorite developer because they don't just push out a product for cash and show that they love the series as much ass us.

That guy...Peter Molyneux? He rarely makes games that are any good, I dunno why people still look forward to his releases.

He had a couple great games at the start, but now he's just more about hype and fitting his foot into his mouth in as many ways as possible.

The best Fable was the first one, even if it didn't live up to the hype-fest he'd made for it.

I still get the urge to play it again sometimes, but that urge goes away after about five loading screens.

I was disappoint by Bethesda. Skyrim on ps3 svcks, to be honest. Doesn't work as it is suppose to - framerate is like 10fps after playing for 10 minutes.

There are a couple of reasons behind why there are more shooters then RPGs. First off the availability of shooter engines, there are a number of engines you can get for shooters these days which work pretty much as shooters out of the box, Look at the Source/Gold Source engines, the id Tech engines (which are moving slowly toward more RPG/FPS hybrids), the Unreal engines, etc, etc. Now look at RPG engines, they do not work out of the box, you have to modify them heavily so since every RPG is different. Is Skyrim even like Fallout 3? not really, there are a lot of similarities but the games differ a lot in actual gameplay. Is Oblivion like Neverwinter nights? Is KOTOR like Mass Effect? RPGs differ A LOT.

After this you then you need to consider what makes an RPG and RPG? It's storytelling ability! nowadays almost all games have a storyline and as an RPG you need to have a dynamic well suited storyline that adapts to both the gameplay and choices of the player, some companies what to take any old hack-and-slash and call it an RPG, but it just doesn't work that way, an RPG is a Role-playing game, Heavenly Sword is not an RPG, it's a hack-and-slash and proud of it. Unfortunately there are some games (which I shall not name) which are really hack-and-slash adventures like heavenly sword is but less fun to play (then heavenly sword) and with far worse story lines which tout themselves as "RPGs" when they're not.

In other words an RPG is not a type of game at all, it is a type of game play experience and a lot of games confusingly think that a progressive leveling experience is the same thing as a role playing adventure. Instead an RPG is a game where the major focus is the writing and not the combat and this is another area that makes RPGs hard to make, writing, you need good writers and you need to be able to adapt the storyline to go down multiple different paths or routes; something that Bethesda isn't actually that good at, but the storyline is still good enough to be considered an RPG and other elements cement it as an RPG like being able to and fail at, pickpocketing.

To top it all off a good RPG has a good amount of LORE behind it, this needs more writing and also needs ambiguity (no two people every hear the same thing, one records things down slightly differently to another and neither gets the details exactly right).

Now let's look at an FPS, gun fires, check. People get hurt when hit, check, you die when your health hits zero... ah check.

fable 2 is a great customization and adventure RPG, not a complete sandbox game. You will see mass effect 3 on your system, but the first one is still an xbox exclusive
