Hi!
I started the "First Lessons" quest and left midway to do some other quests and now I can't get it to restart. I have the quest "arrow" pointing at the floor
in front of Tolfdir but nothing happens when I stand there. Nothing happens when I talk to him or any other of the NPSs in the room.
I hope this doesn't mean I have to reload since I've done quite many quests during the break.
Anyone with a hint on what to do?

I have nearly the same Problem with this quest. I started it too, but couldn′t listen what I have to do at this point (my child was screaming at this time near me! *lovely reallife^^*)! I learned the "Shield Spell" from him and as I understand, I move over to the arrow in front of him and start the Shield spell?! RIGHT? He will demonstrate anything... magic!
So I do the Shield- Spell right there and nothing happens!!! I attacked him (after different tries) with icebolts and *surprise* ... NOTHING HAPPENS! HELP PLZ
Is it buggy, or did I something wrong?
I go on Questing by now^^

After a little "YouTube"- Search, I found the Quest there. Tolfdir will attack me (!)/ you when u activate shield spell. You have to stay on the Arrow in front of him and that′s it!
If NOT so it′s a bug or something else. If there is no way to restart the quest, or it will be fixed anyway, I think we have to reload an a earlier point of the game and try again!

OK, he is teaching you how to use shield spell. First he asks you to throw a fire or ice spell (or else, I used fire) toward him. Do it and he will use his shield spell. Do it again and again until he thinks that you have learned enough. Then he will ask you to use your shield spell to protect you against his spell. A few times.
Is it OK or do you still have problems?

thx for answer. After I did some quest last days, I went back to Academy and try again the Quest. I let Lydia stay on the door and move over to Tolfdir. I go to him and after some seconds all the dialogues before the "Shield -Questpart" started again! (He talks to the new novice pupils and they want to see something practical and so on...). After this I go to the arrow on the ground in front of him, did the shield and...
IT WORKS AS FINE AS IT SHOULD DO! So my Problem is no one any more. Thx for help and bye.

P.S.: It was happened before the Game Patch!
