A little advice...

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:51 am

Just started this beast of a game, I have a few questions though..

I have been collecting pretty much everything I can, I have read somewhere that it is best to keep items for future quests etc. So can anyone tell me specifics that should be kept? Or somewhere I can store my items?

If something is a quest item it won't let you drop it, so you don't need to hoard everything. :)

If you pick up a quest item, it won't let you drop it from your inventory. For items that might be used later, just pick one chest in one place and store everything there so you know where to look. I can tell you one thing...Daedra hearts..just in case. :)

Some items, like animal skins or ores, can be of use when smithing and such later in the game, so it's wise to keep them on you. The easiest house to obtain is Breezehome in Whiterun: do all the quests the Jarl of Whiterun gives you, and he will allow you to buy a house from his housecarl, at the price of 5000 septims. Not that cheap for early on in the game, but it's very convenient, and definitely worth investing into.

Dragon priest masks, and your thieves guild armor (when you get there) are two I can think of off the top of my head, however, quest needed items are almost always unable to be dropped at all until completeion of it. Sometimes even after the completion they can get stuck. Almost all of what you pick up you can sell without worry, and those that can't will be stuck there anyway.

A house early on in the games main quest (just after the first dragon fight after Bleak falls) will become available for purchase from the jarls steward. For now manage your inventory and pick up the most valuable items.

One exception people have complained about is one of the thieves guild armors, which you can sell but is required for a quest.

Several miscellaneous quests require you to collect something for someone - it's okay to start looking for it once you get the quest, but it saves time if you already have said items. These will be flawless gems, Nightshade, Deathbells, Nirnroots, golden ore, mammoth tusk... I don't remember them all, but it's good to stock them somewhere until you get the quests.

Regular quest items cannot be dropped, so don't worry about it. Two exceptions: Thieves Guild Armor and Dragon Priest masks. Don't sell them, you'll need them later.

In most cases. But not all. Selling the Thieves Guild armor you get will break that questline later on, but it is dropable/sellable.

Not always true. It may depend on the quest. For example, I found a named bow in the Ratway that the wouldn't let me drop because it's a quest item; many hours later on, I ran into the guy who shared a name with the bow, and the dialogue option opened to ask him about it, presto, quest completed. My general rule of thumb actually is if something has a unique name, I pick it up, figuring it's a quest item I'll need later.

There are, I listed the items in my post  20 of each plant, 5 Ice Wraith Teeth, 2 flawless sapphires, 1 flawless ruby, 3 flawless amethysts, 2 mammoth tusks, gold ore - that's all I remember.

Well, I agree on flowers, but flawless gems seem to suddenly disappear when you need them ;)

Truth to that lol I've only encountered one fellow who required 3 flawless amethysts and it just stayed in my inventory for 50 hours till I had them all (and remembered not to sell them lol)

But the gems are there and they aren't unique like named quest objects so it isn't like they will never find them again like a specific dragon priest mask or panteas flute.

For good storage you can get right off the bat, join the Mage College in Winterhold. You get a free room with 8 or 9 storage containers all right close to each other - very handy for sorting your stuff (eg smithing, alchemy, enchantables, loot for selling, junk for hoarding, etc).

The messed up part is, I did it all right this time, got the quest first, then got the flute, turned it in and GUESS WHAT? THE DAM FLUTE IS STILL IN MY INVENTORY! LOLOL

Early on in the game, I wouldn't worry about what to keep and what not, I sell everything I can't use usually when I start a new game! As some said, you won't be able to sell or drop quest items.

Yes, there are potions of Strength. And some items have an enchantment that will add to your carry weight. Also, when ever you level up and choose Stamina, your carry weight also increases.

Some books are used in small quests, so it's better to save them if they seem unique. It's safe to sell duplicate spell tomes.

A cheaper way is to join the College in Winterhold. You have your own room with several barrels, nightstands, and wardrobe closets. OTOH it's a pain because of all the doors you have to go through. Buying a house is a way better way to go but you still have to spend the 5K and then extra on upgrades. Still though, a house with its own alchemy lab is nice. And when you can afford to buy a house with both an enchanting table and alchemy lab, it's money well spent.

The barrels in the College room respawn. The nightstands and closet seem to be safe.

With the flute this is true for something you aren't referring to. As for Finn's Lute or Rjorn's Drum, you can take them since it won't matter either way (and saves you a second trip!)

Quest items don't weigh anything.

I heard the Elder Scroll does regardless, or is this untrue? I just tried to remove it via console but it refused to let me for some reason (and yes I had the correct command.)

Edited for grammar. D:

I try to keep flawless gems (you'll need some for various quests), a gold ore, a couple of mammoth tusks, jazbay graqes, fire salts, frost salts and ice wraith teeth (needed for people in Riften and a couple of other places), nirnroots (also Riften), any bow with someone's name (these won't bug the quests, it's just the musical instruments that are tricky - and you can give them to their owner once you run into them).
