little help? dropped vs. stored items

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 12:45 pm

Very new to game, found myself with too many items a few times. I have dropped items a few times, but sometimes where I expect to be able to drop an item, it says store. When I confirm store, it definitely takes the item from my inventory, but I have no clue as to where it has gone. Do I lose the stuff? Any help would be appreciated.

did you store the items in a chest or dead body? If so check wherever you stored them.

I don't really understand what you mean. But you don't lose the stuff, you can pick it up later where you left it.

Let me try to clarify a bit. I am only level 5, so I have been collecting items, weapons, Shields, etc to sell to build up money. Under the item menu, when I look at my items, sometimes it says drop, and I will physically see the item on the ground when I pick that. Other times, drop will not be an option, it says store. When I hit that, the item leaves my inventory, and carried weight goes down.I do not have a house or any other means of storage that I am aware of. That hopefully clarifies, so where could my stuff have gone.I don't want to lose the value of those items. This is for ps3.

when you're given an option to store, you've got something open that you can store things in. It can be a chest, wardrobe, body, etc. Storing is preferable to dropping, as sometimes when you go back to get it, dropped items are gone.

I would be very careful about where you store items. Until you have a home nothing is 100% safe either dropped or stored. I found a place in Whiterun where no NPC's walk to drop items when I first started playing. Nothing was taken but NPC's can pick up items so don't leave anything really valuable just lying around. Also things like barrels and chests in certain areas will reset after a certain amount of in game time passes causing what you may have placed in them to disappear. I never leave valuables on bodies any more. I went through one dungeon where, due to a large number of enemies near the end, enemies I had killed at the beginning were gone when I went back through. I lost loot on that run. Never did that again.

When your cursor is hovered over a barrel, body, wardrobe, chest, desk, etc, the computer may think you want to 'store' your items IN that object. Which, of course, you don't.

My advice? Stop dropping things. Sell them. You need money! It costs 5000 to get a house in Whiterun. Sell these items and buy a house, which is the ONLY way to guarantee you can store items safely. There is a chest in the bedroom of that house which will hold all your items without ever losing them.

If you want those items again, just buy them back later for a little more money. Believe me, money is NOT a problem in this game. I'm level 36 and have 57k without even looting bodies anymore :) Just be patient and stop dropping stuff :D
