Little oddities about Skyrim

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 8:59 pm

After having played it quite a bit, I find myself sometimes wondering about the odd little things that aren't problems and don't really detract from the gaming experience but are just a bit weird.

Like how come you can march up to a farm and take all their crops? I realise thre's that 'I have potatos to sell' function and it maybe originally had something to do with the axed economics function - help the farmer by working in their fields. But in a faux medieval world like Skyrim, you're probably dooming a farming family to starvation.

And why do you never find leeks in barrels or sacks? All leeks seem to be either set placed ones or ones growing in fields. Are Skyrim leeks impossible to store or something?

And why can't Bethesda make feet? They've added a fair bit of detail to the character models with the updated engine - we have scars, warpaint, dirty legs (should be optional that IMO - kind realistic but you might like playing a character who bathes often), but they still seem to be utterly confounded by the modelling of feet that aren't sort of splodges. Is it really that difficult to make toes Bethesda? Modders seem to do be able to make perfectly good feet.

Are there insignificant but slightly odd things other people notice?

Its a result of the game mechanics. No system was put in to account for this unless they wanted to go and set ownership of every harvestable plant.

no one can answer this one.

Oblivion had toes, but they opted for toeless feet with Fallout to cut down on unnecessary polygons. Plus, by removing toes, they could put that much more detail into the part people see most, the face.

If you compare model quality from Skyrim to Oblivion, you will find that Oblivion had many models with a bit of setail, and Skyrim has cut back, but uses textures to make up for this. Its a common practice to cut back on a games demand on the system. This is why CoD can look good and still run rather well. The 1st person gun models are rather high in detail.

Well I think in KZ you're to busy to go "Dude, I got feet" but they definitely there lol.
Crysis 2 certainly has a body, the first was a long time ago but I'm sure I remembered seeing feet in speed mode.
AvP(2010) is probably the best one as a Xeno, turn fast and you can chase your own tail.

Yeah I know. I was thinking about those odd little things you just notice but don't really matter and a lot of which are inevitable given the realistic expectations of what can be accounted for.

like in Hilgrund's tomb, that guy is preoccupied with the bodies of his ancestors being defiled - but he doesn't seem to mind my character raising Aunt Agna as a zombie. After complaining about 'filthy dark elf necromancy', he wasn't remotely concerned about my dark elf necromancer raising his ancestors all through the dungeon. To the extent that due to the ritual stone, a bunch of his dead ancestors followed my character out of the dungeon. He didn't seem to care at all - he gave my character money. That guy is confused.

Good point about the feet though. I blame those console users for cursing us with horrible feet.

Heh yeah - makes the game flow as it should, but you can march right into the jarl's bedchamber at 3 in the morning - "oi jarl! wake up! I want to tell you I did something, so get up now!"

The beds bug me.

Why the hell do most have furs, but some have nice beds with covers, etc.

Can these people not weave? They make clothes, but linen, woolen or hemp even, bedding is beyond them?!
The beds don't add up. They are not so primitive they would be using furs!

The only thing other than normal beds that looks right is bedrolls.
The nice beds annoy me slightly, with the turned down corner. Straighten it up, at least!
And why don't they sleep under the bedding. They sleep on top, while fully dressed. They should make them sleep under the bed clothes.

Also, I noticed a lack of textile work throughout the game.
You can't make robes or clothes.
And there ar'nt looms and spinning wheels in houses or buildings.
Not even cosmetically.
Looms would perfect to make clothes and robes on.
Or at least for looks alone.

And feet, yes. They look odd.
I looked at my characters feet when barefoot a few times and thought, are you wearing shoes?!

Also I find it a bit odd that you can take stuff from farmers fields.
I know, it's the pick crops, get paid thing.

But still, you do it and think, I'm taking their livliehood here.

Another thing I've noticed is the way bandits/hostile mages go crazy about attacking wildlife. E.g. my character was sneaking up on Morvunscar (sp?) and the mages were all yelling their combat lines and conjuring stuff even though my character was hidden. It turned out they were all after a fox. Why don't mages like foxes? They didn't even have any chickens to worry about.
The bandits at Valtheim Keep all seem incredibly angry if a deer gets close to them as well. "You'll be so much easier to rob when you're dead!" - that guy must badly need some antlers for his alchemy or something.

My favorite is the random hunter chasing a bunny and screaming "I'll tear your heart out!"

It would be even better if he yelled "Skyrim is for the Nords!" :P

Finding a perfectly edible cabbage, carrot or other piece of food in a thousand year old ruin. Guess the ancient nords really knew how to preserve stuff, eh?

You've never slept with fur blankets, have you? It feels amazing.

They're sleeping on straw matresses with bits of fur barely covering the bed and from the look of it, no covers.
It's hardly a well made fur cover over a sheet, with a covered, sprung mattress and fluffy pillows.

Those beds would feel as far from amazing as you could get.
