Lockpicking/Computer Glitch

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:02 pm

So I was at the computer of the ex-Khan in Novac, I don't remember the guy's name.
The guard who isn't Boone.

I opened his computer and nothing showed up. It made sounds as though it was open, and by the appearance, I was navigating the computer menu. I just didn't see the menu, I was still looking at the same thing I was before I pressed "A" on the console. I spammed "A" a couple times and got my quest log updated(got a map marker, read through his emails I guess?). Didn't think much of it, moved on, thought the console itself was bugged.

But the next time I tried to pick a lock, I had a big computer thing in front of my screen, blocking the lockpick view.
This has happened multiple times now, this is a pretty serious bug, as it makes it nearly impossible for me to pick locks.

Hope this information helps get this fixed.

Install the game on the Hard Drive

Also clear your cache http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971755

Hope it works, this game is starting to scare me :S

I was having problems hacking as well, and here's my personal experience with this problem.

I was having this problem from the start, and tried everything. Clearing cache, etc, did nothing.

I then loaded it back up, tried to hack, of course just got the blurry background screen. Right after that, went into options, reset mapping to default, and then tried to hack again. poof, magically worked.

i am way early into the game. i am not able to hack the first computer ive attempted. i go to hack and the screen freezes and gets a little blurry, then beeps a bunch and nothing happens.
and the first lock ive tried to pick leaves a blank tutorial screen or something over the lock. if i was new to fallout i would be so confused. like wtf? this game is broken. but its not. its buggy. why does obsidian svck?

so i am still around goodsprings and just got to level 2 raising science to 25 so i can hack the computer in the bar. the first time i click the computer it brings up the hacking explination then makes a bunch of sounds but no hacking screen apears on the HUD at all. i can hit B to exit, go back in but it just makes the noises like it loaded but i cant see the hacking interface.

i have reloaded saves, quit out completely and reloaded save and every time i try to hack the computer it wont show the interface but i can hear it working. so i said [censored] it and went into the gas station, as i went to pick the lock in there, the same thing happens, it will bring up the sounds but i can't see the interface with the bobbypin. i was able to feel out the lockpick since it was a "very easy" but otherwise this is no good.

anyone else run across this? anyone have an idea how to fix or do i have to start over and hope it doesnt happen again?

thanks

didn't see this post so i also made a thread with this same post. i'll try the mapping thing in settings but otherwise i havent found a fix yet.

I also have been having the same problem with any terminal I tried to hack. I have written Bethesda and they sent me the standard response, restart, clear cache etc. Obviously automated. Since I haven't seen a huge outpouring of dissent about this other than this thread, I decided its a bad burn, went to gamestop and exchanged the copy, guess what same problem. Gamestop is on my way home from work so I'll do the same today. Game came out yesterday and I'm about to be on my third copy. I'm not losing money on this so hopefully someone there in tech support will at least acknowledge the problem and say they are working on a patch or else I'll keep on returning it until I get a quality product.

Just curious, did any of ya'll try my suggestion in this thread? Here it is again.

Reset your button mappings, and see if that works. It worked for me, and as far as I can tell, no other suggestions (ie: clear cache, delete stuff, etc) have worked for this particular problem thus far.

i had read your comment at work but when i got home and reloaded the game i tried to hack anyways and it worked this time. i think there is a memory leak/cache leak in this game that begins to cause problems after so long playing the game, has anyone else seen problems when they first start playing or is it always after a couple hours. i think shutting off the xbox cleared the ram/cache and it made it better. so i cant say if your trick works or not cause i reloaded two more times and it didnt bug out again. if it does i'll try your trick, i am sure it works to, probly resets something.

I followed this advice, and managed to successfully bring up the hacking screen.

I did a little empirical research and discovered two things:
1. If you spam the "activate" button ( default A, mine's set up for B ), you can occasionally bring up the hacking interface.
2. If you hold down the "activate" button, you can bring up the hacking interface but I do not know if you can input any commands.

friend of mine was having a related issue last night.. for some reason every time he tries to hack a terminal, the screen blurs out and it makes the typing sounds, then his 360 freezes.

tried with game installed / uninstalled, cleared cache, tried a new character, same thing happens to him with a new character, removed the initial game save data, still happens.
