Looking a Baldur's Gate kind of game

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 3:38 pm

Hey folks,

I've gone through some of the recent game threads, looking for current games that are similar to BG. I've got an itch that needs to be scratched.

Gah..premature carriage return..so embarassing with the ladies... :blush2:

Anyway, I'm looking for a BG kind of game. One that's party-based, semi-tactical, and has a good story. What would be really nice if it's AD&D based. And I might be asking for a bit to much here...a game where I need to use my head to solve puzzles!

Flashy graphics aren't needed, kill-cam kinds of games should be avoided.

Thanks for any recommendations....and no, I can't build a time machine for Planescape!

Ultima VII is party based (if you recruit them) with quite a few puzzles, but not exactly tactical.

Arcanum has both real-time and tactical combat modes, and an interesting setting, but I seem to remember the party being more of an afterthought in that game.

Both have a pretty good story, but neither is based on AD&D.

Age of Decadence sounds like your cup of tea. It's a downloadable indie game designed in the way of the classic WRPG such a Baldur's Gate, only (IMO) even better. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1361800-age-of-decadence/page__p__20690974__hl__age%20of__fromsearch__1#entry20690974 the topic on here about it. The full version hasn't been released yet, but it's approaching completion from the looks of it.

Aye, they look great.

But would I need severe patching, mods, etc to make it work on a current computer? Hence the reason why i'm looking for current titles...

Subtonic : looks intrguing, I'll keep my eye's on it

Neverwinter Nights is a D&D game, and its pretty much like Baldurs Gate.

Planescape: Torment is perfectly runnable on a modern PC. If not, Neverwinter Nights 2's original campaign is decent, but Mask of the Betrayer is a wonderful piece of storytelling, coming close to PS:T at times.

NWN 1's story was lame and predictable, so I skipped NWN2. It sounds like the latter one's are OK?

Good to hear about Planescape!

NWN2's story is alright. You know, passable. Much better than that bucket of poo NWN1's main campaign was. But Mask of the Betrayer is magnificent, trust me :)

Don't need a time machine for some older games. There's http://www.gog.com/catalogue/rpgfor that. Altho they may still have a few that aren't updated to Win7, only XP. But yes, some older ones will still work on Win7 on their own.

I can't think of any newer titles to help you out, myself, unfortunately. There aren't too many current/modern RPG's in the BG style - large parties and what not - regardless of top-down or more 3D style. If you're lucky you'll have a couple companions, but that's about it. Maybe the indie games, but don't keep up with those too much.

I would second this. Mask of the Betrayer is brilliant, easily one of the best RPGs of the past decade.

Also, I would encourage those looking for BG type games to give http://www.spidweb.com/ a try. All their games have demos you can try out. I am currently playing their new one, Avernum: Escape from the Pit.

It's not party based but yeah, it's looking very promising and the turn based combat is very tactical.

There's a very large demo for it available too.

There was also this BG-like game coming called 'Broken Hourglass' but I think that's dead.

Wow, I heard of GoG on here, but didn't know the games were updated. Waahoo!!! And the games only cost 2 mochas!
