Laptops really aren't meant for gaming. Even a "high end gaming" laptop pales in comparison to a gaming desktop, even though "gaming" laptops cost nearly twice as much. Laptops have the nasty innate flaws of overheating quickly because of their compact size, plus they're not really upgradable. Gaming desktops last for much longer (Especially considering they're fully upgradable), are cheaper, and are more powerful. They're just not mobile.

I spent a total of $700 for my current gaming PC. To get a laptop of equal specs would cost over $1000, and wouldn't perform as well because of overheating.

Unless you really need the mobility, go for a desktop.

if you want a gaming laptop, get an alienware.

if you want to save hundreds of dollars, get an xbox 360 or a ps3.

Stay far away from Alienware, the overcharge for what you get. You can get a much better laptop from Asus or MSI or any other manufacturer.

@OP: But building a desktop is a much better plan. Also you shouldn't make duplicate threads on other subforums.

That's pretty general.... just buy something that exceeds the requirements for Skyrim. You will need to drop between 600 - 1000 dollars.

I use and reccomend one of these. http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G74SX/
I got mine for $1700 from a small retailer that I'd never heard of. Harvey Norman were asking about $2000-$2500

No cooling issues and plays games respectably (It can play skyrim on high-ultra). My only gripes are that it is a bit much to carry (being 18 inch), the battery doesn't hold out long (about 1-2 hours depending on usage) and the screen is a bit reflective.
Though as others have said, a desktop is more desirable if possible. I only use my Laptop because I don't really have room for a desktop and I use it for many other things on the go.

Stay very far from Alienware. They will charge through the roof ($3000-$5000AU) for a product that isn't very sturdy, has heating issues and has a surprising failure rate.
