looking for any movies, books or games with timetravel

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:00 am

Today an idea sparked in my head about stories about timetravel. I am wondering if any forum members know of any media that involve time travel in two specific ways. One, wars or battles being fought by armys from different times example romans vs the nazis or something like that. Second if armys from different times in history that work together against some other enemy. I have watched dr.who and have read about two thirds of the dark tower series to cross those off the list

I said armys from different times fighting each other though. One man going to the future is not what I asked.

Only one that comes to mind is "The Final Countdown." I. . .didn't like that movie.

If you think about it, the whole idea is difficult to pull off. Romans wouldn't last very long against Nazis -- neither would most technologically inferior enemies -- so the idea is rarely done in such a fashion.

By far the best Time Travel story I know of is "The Twelve Monkeys". I believe it is a book, but I've seen it as a movie (with Bruce Willis starring).

I think it's the best because a lot of other (cheap in my opinion) time travel stories, this starts with the premise that the the past happened and can't be changed. If you go back into the past you're a part of it and can't change it.

General outline of the movie. Not sure if what it contains is a spoiler...

Spoiler
I hope this doesn't spoil the movie (I don't think it will) but to just show the awesomeness... The human population is nearly wiped out due to a weaponized virus, just a few people survive underground including scientists trying to recover the surface. Bruce is a prisoner sent back into the past - not to change it which is impossible, but to get info on the virus before it mutated which might help with a cure. Any way, although he knows he can't change the past he appears to be given an opportunity to stop the virus. But in trying to stop the disaster he actually causes it - it wouldn't have happened if he didn't go back into the past!

I didn't think that spoiled it. Because I never said how that happened. But I'm sorry if it did, I just put spoiler tags around it.

Night At The Museum 1 & 2 are probably the only two that I can think of that does something like that.

Or you could probably watch Deadliest Warrior. That's about as close as I can get.

I believe that was sarcasm. And I think your interpertation of the end was incorrect.

Spoiler
Cole didn't cause the virus, he just fails to stop its release. His work actually allows the scientist from the future to get a seat next to the guy who released the virus on the airplane at the very end -- hinting that a cure can now be developed. IIRC.

Actually I think I was on target.

Spoiler

You are right about Cole note causing the virus per se, he just didn't stop it. I was vague about it in my description to try to avoid spoilers. I didn't sense a hint at the end, just an irony about the scientist from the future, that was just irony. And I didn't say anything about that, and steering clear of explicit spoilers. But in any case the past wasn't changed, even though time travel happened. That is refreshing because almost all other time travel has the past changing the future which is sloppy.

In any case I highly recommend the movie.

I challenge ye.

Spoiler
You said "but in trying to stop the disaster he actually causes it - it wouldn't have happened if he didn't go back into the past!"

Giving this a little more thought, you may be correct. It's vague as to whether his warning to the lead doctor (which led to the doctor leaving the madman in charge of safekeeping the virus) was needed for the virus to be released. Brad Pitt's character, whose name I forget, kidnaps the doctor anyway, so it may have been an inevitability, with or without Cole. . .although Cole inspired Brat Pitt character's crazy animal-releasing plan. . .

Oh no, I've gone cross-eyed. . .

Since the virus was lethal to something like 99% of the human population, the odds of that scientist randomly being on that plane without knowing what she was doing is almost nil. She would have died before meeting Cole in the future. Remember, the scientists said they needed a sample of the original virus -- that's why she went back in time and sat next to him.

Wait, what am I talking about again?

Well. . .agreed that it was a great movie. And an accurate portrayal of Philadelphia to boot

'Timeline"

Book was infinitely better than the movie. Though I own both the book and movie but I only have the movie because I have the book. The book is way better than the movie.

Seems to me that the guys with the guns and tanks would win. :P

I'd name my favorite time travel movie here, but I can't. It would create a spoiler paradox.

I know the romans would not have much of a chance but just the idea of any two or more armies from different times fighting off just sounds amazing to me.

LOVE that movie. I'm pretty sure I can explain 90%+ of it after watching it at least 6 times. :)

Spoiler
You're not supposed to tell people it's about time travel before they see it, though. :whisper:

Army of Darkness.

You'd probably like to check into Chrono Trigger/Cross too. Fight robots with swords.

The TV series Transformers: Beast Wars was all about time travel, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2t4MBhGAg8.

Perhaps your failure to find a story suitable to your wants will inspire you to write that story and become a multi-billionaire. :celebration:

Agreed. The book was soo much better.

I have seen it , it is quite a good movie.

You only say that because you haven't read the book. Read it. Read it nao! Then you will think the movie is crap.

I don't know of any movies that fit your criteria, but I can think of a few books that might do:

Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove - it involves AK-47s in the American Civil War.

The World War series by Harry Turtledove - Argonians Reptilian aliens invade earth during World War II. Strangely, the alien's military technology is equivalent to late 20th century/early 21st century earth tech. Kind of a stretch to your criteria, but still pretty close.
World War Book 1: In the Balance
World War Book 2: Tilting the Balance
World War Book 3: Upsetting the Balance
World War Book 4: Striking the Balance

You may also be interested in some of Harry Turtledove's other works.

My ideas for science fiction are pretty crazy and it does not help my grammar is quite bad.

So, maybe you missed it earlier in the thread -- Twelve Monkeys is the best Time Travel story around.
