Looking for Information

I have recently become intrested in starting up a melee/unarmed char. I never have done this even back when i used to play F3. If someone could give some insight on the key components of exceeding in this sort of char. You can also post links to guides that u think could help me out also.

Any helpful input if welcome.

P.S.: Is either melee or unarmed considered better than one another? Is it necessary to have them both at a high level when playing this sort of char?

Thanks.

Many of the general perks that have melee or unarmed skill requirements actually affect both skills so there are advantages to using both - although it does mean having two very similar weapon skills. I could be wrong but I believe more of these require melee than unarmed, although there are several unarmed specific perks you can learn from people. Another consideration is that melee has more weapon options but unarmed means being disarmed at casinos doesn't impact you.

A good strength is very helpful as is high DT. Stealth is extremely useful for melee/unarmed characters but its not vital.

My second character was a melee sort of guy ;) it's actually pretty cool espeacilly when you have a high weapon skill that involves the use of melee weapons as you can literally send enemies flying with a couple of blows and quickly chop them up while they are stunned on the floor :P I find it more fun then using guns (apart from the sniper like my first character, that was just senstational getting headshot from a distance). Anywhooo, if you are serious about creating an unarmed/melee character you should definately recruit Veronica as she speacilises in melee, it's quite fun charging a group of NCR (sorry i was kinda the bad guy second playthrough) and taking them down face to face :) If you chose a unarmed/melee character make sure you have a high strength though :o (and perhaps endurance) don't worry too much about the others as you can just get implants to make up for them or use that perk (sorry forgot the name of it) when you level up that grants you an extra skill point (i think you can use it 4 or 5 times? not sure), and pretty much will become a bada ss machete wielding hero/villian of the wastelands.

S-10
P-1
E-10
C-1
I-7
A-7
L-6

Intense training twice

As far as perks, anything that helps melee and unarmed. I like to get my agility up so I can charge people faster. I would also get Veronica as a follower, since she too uses unarmed. Power Armor is great later in the game.

I also took my medicine skill up too. The first half or so of the game to me was slightly less entertaining, but once i got me some power armor, and a ballistic fist, its all good times.

I personally took Bloody Mess. Its hilarious when you uppercut an enemy and they explode.

For my character i did melee, and unarmed so I would have more weapon choices.

Since you haven't done a close combat build before I'd suggest a stealth character - and in this case you'll find Silent Running (12) to be absolutely vital. The real difficulty with close combat characters is closing in, a high agility will boost your speed as will lighter equipment. The Travel Light (4) perk augments that even further although I'm ambivalent about raising my survival score so high, the skill itself doesn't appeal to me much. A high strength gets you more bonus damage (for melee and unarmed), a higher melee skill, and access to the more powerful weapons. A high endurance gets you a higher unarmed skill and more hitpoints which, as with agility, helps with closing in.

I just started a melee/unarmed character, I'm specifically staying away from stealth (I did that a lot with FO3) so I wouldn't suggest copying this directly. Part of the build focus is getting my critical chance very high, if you remove some of those poerks there should be room for some stealthy ones.

2
4
6 Toughness
8 Super Slam
10 Finesse
12 Unstoppable Force
14 Purifier
16 Better Criticals
18 Piercing Strike (12)
20 Stonewall (8)
22
24 Slayer

As for trains I've got Built to Destroy (to boost my crit chance) and Trigger Discipline (if I have to use a ranged weapon my accuracy is going to svck since my skills are so low, this will help).

Considering how annoying enemies with DT are I can't imagine not getting Piercing Strike if I was playing a non-ranged character.

Does Super Slam proc very often? It's hard to tell how good that perk would be without actually getting it first.....

At least 10% of the time, probably closer to 20% . . . although if it's tied to crit level that will be skewed up with this character. I picked it up at level 8 and just hit level 9 and it's already been very useful.

I've only been knocked down once, and that was by a big horner.
