Looking for a new anime...

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:38 pm

I'm pretty sure Netflix is tired of me watching Fruits Basket over and over and over again, so I'm looking for another series to watch. I tend to lean towards the funny/light-hearted ones (Fruits Basket is my all time fav, but I also like Inuyasha), but I'm open to suggestions.

Oh, or movies. I haven't seen too many of those but do tend to enjoy them. (Except Akira ... not sure why but that movie wigged me out. :cold: )

There's an anime somewhat hyped last year in Japan, the name is something like "How can my sis be so cute" in English. No it's not hentai but it makes some jokes about otaku and video game culture.

I know the two seasons of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell:_Stand_Alone_Complex are available on instant watch (or whatever the streaming service is called). I watched them a few months ago, they were definitely good though I probably wouldn't have bothered watching the second season in retrospect. It's not very funny or light-hearted but you did say you were open to suggestions. ;)

If you liked Inuyasha perhaps you'd like to look at other works by Rumiko like Ranma 1/2. I'll take a wild guess you'd also enjoy Azumanga Daioh and perhaps Lucky Star, or perhaps you'd like something entirely different from what you are used to, perhaps something more gritty and story driven like Berserk (the manga is much better than the anime though) or a classical Shonen like Naruto/One Piece/Bleach/Dragonball (I personally like Naruto the most out of these).

Anyway just some starters to check out. Gotta go now so no more time for suggestions.

Deathnote its not light hearted or anything but its freaking amazing. Best anime I have ever seen. Heres a sypnopsis I found:
Yagami Light is an ace student with great prospects, who's bored out of his mind. One day he finds the "Death Note": a notebook from the realm of the Death Gods, with the power to kill people in any way he desires. With the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create his perfect world, without crime or criminals. However, when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer, and a battle of wits, deception and logic ensues...

Funny and Lighthearted...One Piece, Fairy Tail, Rave Master (although they never did complete the anime), and Cowboy Bebop at times.

If you accept Manga I would recommend the one single Manga I've read alpha to omega: Gunnm (aka "Battle Angel Alita"). Read it after constant pressure by a friend, I really liked it as it's quite realistic (that is, no magic or monsters) and I'm a svcker for dystopia.

It's very bleak stuff. Very depressing. That's why I like it. I hate the usual sunshine-and-girls-in-miniskirts anime/hentai that are the genres' main stereotypes.

I'll recommend Aria if you like light-hearted. Can't get much more light-hearted then Aria. Nozomi is streaming the first two episodes right now and will add more episodes on a regular basis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSF8lsB2jpw For more suggestions head over to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1252573-unofficial-anime-thread-xi. Also in the Anime thread you will find a nice list of free, legal, places to watch anime online.

I'm pretty certain all of us regulars in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1252573-unofficial-anime-thread-xi have seen it multiple times, and I know at least one person (besides me ;)) has the complete manga collection.

I have no idea if it's on Netflix though

Netflix instant-streaming has a very strong anti-subtitles standpoint and don't stream anything with them (they actually are being sued over this by the National Association of the Deaf). Since Sentai Filmworks has only a few titles dubbed, you can't find their licensed works (including Special A) on Netflix.

Hmm hard to say what might be a good funny/lighthearted anime since I tend to watch some harem stuff. Tenchi Muyo, Saint Knight's Tale, and Hand Maid May might be good to take a look at. Hand Maid May is a bit more T rated due to naughty scenes however there's no nudity shown. Saint Knights Tale is a 12 part OVA series but I haven't seen any way to get a hold of it here in the US. Doesn't seem like it's been officially released yet which bums me out since I want to watch it.

Tenchi Muyo GXP might be good however some fans of the original Tenchi stuff aren't too thrilled with it. Trigun "might" be a good one however it gets darker towards the end so that might not be a good find. Final one i'll recommend is I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs it's very very weird and never watched it however it seems funny.

You can legally stream seasons one and two of Wagnaria!! (aka Working!!) http://www.crunchyroll.com/wagnaria#s=/wagnaria/episodes, it doesn't have much of a story like Fruits Basket but it's pretty funny.

I agree with this.

If you want to watch it on Netflix, Clannad and Clannad: After Story are really good, I also reccomend Gurren Lagann, Strike Witches, and High School of the Dead.

I've actually seen all the Dragonballs, Ranma 1/2 is my second favorite series, I LOVED Cowboy Bebop, enjoyed Tenchi Muyo too.. but all fantastic suggestions none-the-less. ;)

Ghost in the shell is one of the ones I've been thinking of watching. I saw a stand alone episode once and thought it was a pretty neat idea.

For the rest: I'm definitely going to look into them. Thanks so much guys!!

And Defron - that's only partly true as I have watched the full list of released anime for Inuyasha in subtitles only on Netflix stream. They don't offer it in the dubbed version.

Oh and Fruits Basket is the absolute best! I love the story, the characters, and it never fails to make me crack up even though I've seen it a million times. I just wish they had gone a bit further with the anime...
Spoiler
I'm told the manga (which I'm in the process of reading) goes far enough into the future for us to see Tohru married with a child. I would have been ok if they had just gone long enough to explain the end of the curse.

I'll head over to the anime thread now though.. thanks for the link!

Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood) is by far one of the best Anime I've ever seen. They also have Robotech if you like the mech based genera (no Gundam Wing though, which is heart breaking). Black Butler is also a great one, all of which you can find on Netflix in an instant que.

90% of Trigun and Full Metal Alchemist is lighthearted and funny...but FMA makes me tear up every time at the same spot of one episode. Anyone who's watched through it probably knows what I'm talking about.
