I am a skyrim virgin.

I've always wanted to play it, but I was sort of waiting till all the dlc would come out. Well, I'm sort of tired of waiting and I"m thinking of picking it up. Overall, is the atmosphere in this game really strong?

I heard the narrative in this game is pretty weak, but to me a strong atmosphere will always beat out a weak narrative.

I've seen some trailers, and it just looks divine. The beautiful mountain scape, with the starry nebula's above is just to beautiful to describe. Is this the general atmosphere for the game? Or is that the only good part? So I guess basically, is it more than a one trick pony regarding atmosphere.

short answer: yes.

there are many different kinds of terrain in skyrim, it's not all snowy mountains. it's about as atmospheric as your going to find in a game. it's what bethesda are masters at. yeah the narrative does leave something to be desired, but i don't think there's anything else out there that presents a world that is so convincingly alive.

Buy it. Play it. Love it.

This game has a lot of bugs. If your planning on buying skyrim on xbox 360 and all the dlc, install all the updates first, install skyrim then download the dlcs. If your not planning on getting any dlcs, dont worry about them.

If your on pc, well you have the creation kit and the command console. So your safe from bugs. Just look up the commands.

I do not regret buying skyrim on xbox 360 despite the massive amount of bugs. The crashes have not happened recently and their are not as much bugs now. But I learnt what bugs there are when playing about 2 saves.

I couldn't guess whether you would love the game or not, but if you do you can easily get 1000 hours out of it. There aren't many that can give you that.

The world design is absolutely stunning - the world is filled with beautiful vistas, hand-placed quirks and each location seems to have a way of telling its on story, be it dungeon or unmarked camp. And atmosphere? Amazing. Many moments have me in total awe.

It's true that there's an over-reliance on dungeon diving in quests, and some of the questlines are fairly ... Average. But there are some quests which are really well done (such as the various Daedric quests) and the Dark Brotherhood and main quests are pretty good. Besides, this isn't the sort of game where someone needs to tell you what to do - half the fun comes from exploring and experiencing.

If this is your first Elder Scrolls game, don't forget to read the in-game books and soak up all of the lore. It will blow your mind. From simple things such as geography and the history of races and provinces, to odd and complex ideas such as CHIM, the Elder Scrolls series has enough lore behind it to fill an entire set of encyclopaedias.

At the end of the day, I'd say its absolutely worth the $60. I've put around 1000 hours into the game, but it's still excellent value even if you only put 60 hours into it. And yes, that aurora is stunning.

oh yeah, avoid buying on ps3 too, i hear nothing but pain from those who did.

I'll definitely check it out than. I rarely spend 60$ on games, simply because as a college student I just don't have that much spare change to spend. The last game I bought was Bioshock, and to me that was the pinnacle of atmosphere in video games. To me, that's what separate video games from other media like books, films, Broadway theater. It's the ability to just allow the player to be 100% drenched in the atmosphere, exploring the little details that make you so in love, and to just take it as slowly as you want and simply soak it in like a sponge. One of the best feelings a video game can give you in my opinion.

An it sounds like Skyrim is just the ticket. I was already quite impressed by the various trailers and walkthroughs I saw, and it sounds like the game itself is great value already.

One last question though.

I am someone that enjoyed Fable, and Fable II (hated Fable 3). I know, it's considered a lite rpg, but I thought fable had a really nice atmosphere, and the rpg mechanics were something that weren't to overbearing for newcomers.

With skyrim, is it completely overbearing? I just feel like the rpg system and mechanics are set up for hardcoe veterans and that i'll be a bit difficult to get into the swing of things, coming for a more light rpg background.

I would not regret buying this game if it costed me $200

Skyrim was scaled down on the RPG front in many ways compared to the other TES games.
I think you will have fun with the system.

Also, one last note. I have to give praise for whoever did the Skyrim OST. I have been listening to it on youtube, and I'd argue it's probably one the best orchestrated sound track in a video game ever.

No hyperbole either. It sounds completely cinematic, and just oozes with brilliance. It's beautiful, powerful, and tender all at the same time. Bravo, to whoever wrote the pieces.

What is the general consensus among Elder Scroll fans regarding skyrim?

I know that some say that Morrowind is considered one of the best ES games amongst the bunch.

But I hear some say Skyrim is the best.

consensus is pretty mixed. the only TES game no one considers the best is Arena, all the others are up for grabs.

i think generally Skyrim is mostly considered almost as good as Morrowind, but there are others who would refute that. all you need to know is that Skyrim is really, really good. some people consider Morrowind one of the greatest games of all time, so it's always going to have a hard time topping that.

If you aren't worried about little details, then Skyrim is the best of the crop as regards world to explore and action. Example, some people, myself included, prefer Fallout 3 to New Vegas for the exploration. Some will tell you Fallout 3 is stupid because there is no obvious way for communities to support themselves, whereas NV has agriculture. If you don't give a damn about such things while you are off exploring and fighting and taking in the view, then Skyrim is perfect for you.

Where does Oblivion rank?

I played it when I was younger, and I just couldn't gel into it. I'm thinking maybe I should try it again..but I hear some say that Oblivion was so-so
