looking to get an SSD

with the recent price drops im considering now getting an SSD. from what i can gather it seems that the only two real choices are intel and crucial. crucial is faster but not nearly as realiable. someone posted a survey that had intel at around .5% failure rate (not sure what time period this was over) and the others were over 2.4% which is really really bad from a QA point of view. i think crucial was slightly better at around 2% but thats still four times worse than intels. the problem is that intels are significantly slower than the others and frankly its not much faster than my velociraptors from some of the reviews ive read. are they still not ready for prime time yet or is this now mostly a software issue at this point and could be fixed by future updates? basically i looking to just get a 300GB for my windows and my games. everything else ill just keep on my current drives. thanks for any help.

reliability is primary but i would like to see a noticable improvement over my current 10000rpm velociraptors. a slight improvement doesnt really justify the price for me.

Well, I'm holding out on getting an SSD for pretty much the same reasons you said. They're still pretty expensive compared to HDDs and they tend to have a much shorter lifespan. But if you really want one, you can always try browsing http://www.newegg.com/ and checking the customer reviews there.

Do you really need 300gb of space on an SSD?

Save some money, get something a little smaller with better performance and just put your OS and some commonly used programs/games on it. You won't need 300gb for that... Stick the rest of your data on your current HDD.

thats were i got the impression that crucial and intel were the only viable choices. apparently corsair and especially ocz have horrible track records. someone posted that would have to continuously overwrite your SSD for something like 40 years nonstop to get to the point where you couldnt anymore. i dont know if they were blowing smoke or if thats an accurate assessment. also supposedly you never have to defrag so that signficicanly cuts down how many rewrites you do since you no longer have to defrag every time you install a new game or program.

@cryptoparrot............they arent actually that badly price anymore. intels are a bit more but my first velociraptor drive just as much as the SSDs are right now. i have a ton of games both on STEAM outside of STEAM and i play a lot of first person shooters and other games that are graphics and texture intensive. i also use graphics mods on pretty much every game i have...........even the RTS games. so yeah 300 would be enough to future proof........i dont plan on buying another one for as long as i can.
