Looks vs power

I use the Sauron armor.

This is actually inefficient because light armor tree is the better tree, all armor can reach the armor cap and less perks are used.

I think that is a seriously good idea because it would remain more of a mystery to the players thus mixing up the choices even more.
I would like it. And if we add on it that when you buy stuff from merchants they may (when you look at item) tell something about it and it can be true or not. You may choose if you trust in merchant or not - you can find good items or be fooled. (It gives also meaning for speech skill which will affect how much merchants are trying to fool you.)

ebony and skyforge steel is pretty pimpin and pretty effective. I love the look of steel and wear it until i get ebony or deadric. Steel plate also looks "real"

RPing, fur for the snowy regions, stud/leather/hide for the warmer parts, standard clothes when in a relatively safe location, forsworn armour just doesn't cut it at Winterhold ;)

On my Dunmer marauder I actually found a use for the "crafting abuse". I'm now walking around in Banded Iron armor, with iron gloves and boots, and a black mage hood, and my armor rating is as good as if I was wearing full Daedric at Flawless level (I could do more but I want the game to stay balanced lol... and anyways I almost died a few times in Legendary Daedric, so I think this suit will do)

I prefer aesthetics, and since the stronger the gear is the more ridiculous and gaudy it looks, I'm pretty much stuck with the basics.

Unfortunately it was the same in oblivion. Fortunately the knights of the nine armour and sword were pretty good looking and could rivalled daedric

Stats based. I don't play in 3rd so what it looks like doesn't bother me, and I'm roleplaying someone who doesn't want to die, so she wears the best gear she can find despite what it looks like. This ain't no fashion parade, son! :P

However, early on in the game I came across some armour (possibly Forsworn?) which had better stats so I switched. Later on I went to 3rd out of curiosity and was surprised to notice that my apparently better armour was little more than a fur bikini. Odd to me, but what the heck, stats are stats.

I maily use 1st person view, so looks don't matter so much, so I mainly go with power.

I design my characters so I can have both looks and power. This mostly boils down to enchanting clothing and using alteration as my armor. But you can do the same with just blacksmithing if you're lucky to find properly enchanted armor pieces of your favourite tier and improve them. You can easily hit the armor cap with lesser tiers.

Definitely looks / aesthetics. My current char is a down and dirty light armor / archer fighter type. She won't wear Elven because it's basically Thalmor armor, and glass just looks silly. So she wears either Stormcloak armor, scaled, or leather. Leather is still IMO the best looking "civilized" light armor, and the Saviour's Hide worn with Forsaken boots and bracers makes a great barbarian look on female characters.

The good thing is that with the smithing system, there's no need to ever wear the "better" armor, since you can craft even the weakest armor to the point where the difference in base stats doesn't matter.

I go for the looks/and or immersion over stats...with smithig and perks you can reach the armor cap with any armor anyway

... but on a related note, I still wish there was a Smithing perk for leather armor types, or at least that leather had been included along with Steel. It's kind of annoying that it takes so much more skill to make legendary Leather armor than Scaled. Though I suppose you could argue that this is a result of the materials themselves, since with scaled armor at least you have steel scales, while with leather armor you're working with only leather.

I...I want to roleplay a mighty archmage, but everytime I look at the Archmage's Robe I feel there should be an option to build and maintain a sheep farm.

Well, I also refuse to wear armor that looks impratical, "super-hero like" or that's totally out of context. An example of this are: glass armor, nightingale and DB suit, daedric and dragonborn armor. I ristrect myself mostly to leather, scales and steel...

I also tend to choose the right equipment for the job... If I have to sneak around, I drop armor completely (except maybe some enchanted light boots) to reduce the noise. If I have to throw myself into a thick melee fight, I wear a full suit of steel or ebony.

How about Ebony (Alien with Robocop) suit? :P

I don't have to choose. I tend to like the way the more powerful stuff looks. I prefer the Nightingale Armor however, especially since I can improve that stuff WAY beyond what it starts at. Basically, I can have it both ways.

People should also consider that maybe Bethesda thought the more powerful stuff looked really bad-ass. In their minds it very well could be that you are getting both Looks and Power when you put on Dragon Plate Armor (I don't exactly agree there, but my tastes are not anybody else's tastes).

Looks, but then again I try and optimize everything (within reason) through smithy/ench when able.
So, cool-looking armor usually ends up quite viable, it's awesome system really, ala Dark Souls.

On a side note, I could never melee in 1st person, it's just so clumsy and awkward (with little to no variation) compared to 3rd person melee combat, loads more battlefield control and diverse animations etc.
Sticking to 1st person for archery/spells is the way to go imo.

How about Ebony (Alien with Robocop) suit?
Only the helm is a bit out of context. The rest or the armor looks like some XIV century plate mail created by master blacksmiths in Milan or Nurnberg (these two towns were renowned in late medioeval times for their armors). They quenched hot wrought iron into baths of oil to create a protective, dark coating (the same technique later applied to gun barrels to create the distinctive 'gunmetal' color)

Actually, I prefer the ebony mail (Daedric artefact) over the standard ebony plate mail because of the more refined, early renaissance style. Both will do and I can assure you they're quite credible plate mail reproductions.

What do you prefer?

Do you keep using equipment that is aesthetically pleasing or try and get something which does the most damage/protection

At a certain point, it does not matter what armor or weapon material one uses. While it may not offer the ultimate protection/damage stat wise, even Fur or Iron armor can offer enough protection if you have the right skills and perks to protect you in any situation. Same with weapons, except maybe using an off skill weapon.
