Lore correct Energy weapons?

Post » Sun Jul 03, 2011 5:29 pm

I've been hearing old time players saying that some energy weapons or generally EW as a whole were ''no longer lore correct'', can someone tell me how they be or how they used to be in the original Fallout (and therefore the differences with the current versions).

Thanks!

I don't know about them being incorrect. Laser weapons were always kind of pathetic (excepting the gatling laser) and plasma rocked.

The Energy weapons in the originals were more like industrial tools rather than "death ray" guns. They also did much more damage and were alot more rare. If you check the wiki you'll see the asethic differences as well.

Personally I like the look of the new energy weapons though, particuarly the laser rifle.

For odd reasons ( ~that I don't know... 'cuz they own it all), the energy weapons established in all prior games are missing from the world entirely.

Laser rifles, and plasma rifles of the series have been replaced with eh... out of context designs mostly. (Though I do like their Plasma rifle and laser rifle designs)

*Its not just energy weapons though ~it almost all weapons and the robots too.

Here is an image of the Watts 2000: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Laser_rifle_%28Fallout%29

Alas... some of the weapons have named manufacturers that don't like free publicity (and potential negative publicity), or want to get paid for the name... so many identifiable guns are notably absent.

(and the original Plasma pistol was said to be made by Glock.)

I dunno... What about this?

What're you on about, Laser was miles beyond basically all Guns.

Most of the technology was stripped and made fugly by Bethesda with Fallout 3.

The only tech I can think of that resembles the originals is the Robobrain, they are pretty similar.

In short, the previous Fallout's tech was much less modern sci-fi.

I checked out a lot of your other stuff to, and I'm just curious about how difficult it is to create custom textures and mod in general?

I've wanted to give it a go myself, but I always figured it involved lots of math so I've shied away from it.

I can talk circles around most people in history, science, and everything in between but math is not my strong suit.

Beginning with Fallout 3, Bethesda opted to replace the energy weapons of the series with new ones, much as T-45d and East Coast APA were the primary forms of power armor encountered.
The older weapons are referenced as having been made obsolescent by the designs encountered in Fallout 3, but you never actually see them.

NV adds the old-school Plasma Rifle back in as the Plasma Caster, though, unless I'm remembering my information incorrectly.

Energy weapons in fallout 1&2 were the end game weapons dealing much more damage than their gun counterparts for the most part, they were also incredibly rare and expensive the lowly laser pistol made enemies quake with fear, there are also a lot of design changes. Energy weapons had to become more common and lesd powerful as weapon progression changed in fallout 1&2 it went melle guns as you could afford them and ammo to energy weapons late in the game since before then there weren't any, in 3 and vegas all the weapon skilks were made viable options so you needed different energy weapons to fill the early weapon roles along with making them available.

Also in NV the Plasma Defender was the old school Glock plasma pistol with its extended magazine already built in.

I can easily say Bethesda made better looking Mr. Handy's and Sentry Bots.

There was a slight redesing by bethesda. I have barely played the classics and i still want Wattz weapons back! Also the "burned game" had an interesting weapon, "Home-Made Laser Rifle" that would have made a nice schematic weapon ;) Even more interestingly it fired blue laser beams :lmao:

(For those not in the know, blue lasers are more difficult to produce than red ones).

Of course, i have mods for the classics: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197988732882/screenshot/595815243086648113?tab=public, http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197988732882/screenshot/595815243086766303?tab=public.

Still havent found the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/MEC_Gauss_Minigun or the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/M72_Gauss_rifle_%28Fallout_2%29.

I don't think this matters. If the currents ones were the originals and the original the current, people would be like where are all my energy weapons. So as I see people are very picky.

They were the big, clunky top tier weapons used to take down top tier enemies. Not the laser pointers that were in the last 2 games, though arguably Fallout New Vegas has given EW users the shaft when it comes to damage and versitility.

I can easily say Bethesda made better looking Mr. Handy's and Sentry Bots.

How does that matter though? Its a series with 200 years played out between the games.

Mr.Handy (for example) was an antique, and that is how they looked in Fallout 1, and that is how they still looked 80 years later in Fallout 2 (because that's how they looked when they built them decades before Fallout1's beginning), and then 32 years after... that they all suddenly never looked that way at all, and have less than half the arms that they used to, and only one hand!? ~Its absurd that the antique machine's appearance doesn't match it's own past ~its an antique and that's how they looked.
(And aside from it all... The robot was featured in the title animation of Fallout 1 along side the BOS Power Armor).

***Or could I really fool anyone by showing off this fine antique http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/63-chevy-corvette.jpg in near mint condition.

The is no reason not to include new designs, but to redesign the established ones was really backhanding the established fans the day it shipped IMO; and they did it with a lot of things in the game.
And they energy weapons are a prime example. If they just had to claim them obsolete (in a world with no industry whatsoever, and no active manufacturing), they should still have had them around as antiques ~even as broken clutter; but preferably the undamaged and little used ones should have still worked. Its always been a joy of the series to explore down into some time-capsule of a location ~like an old military base or research facility, and find old-high tech. But it feels silly to find old tech with a completely new appearance from the last time you found the same items.

^ This is true, that is why Bethesda needs to make a Fallout Bible of their own to explain some of these things.

In my opinion, a lot of the Fallout 1/2 visuals did not age well. Beth's redesign basically made them palatable to a more high-def era of gaming.

For instance, the FO1/2 plasma pistol looks like a rather plain and generic "pew pew" energy gun than a plasma weapon, made especially apparent in FONV when it gets rebranded as the Plasma Defender. The plasma rifle (now the caster) looks like an alien food blender. The new plasma weapons have a more "Mad Scientist" feel to them, and actually have plasma arcs visible.

The different plasma weapons were explained by FONV, actually. On the "Future Weapons Today" skill mag, a "Colonel Moretti" slams the "venerable" P-94. And in the REPCONN headquarters, all the project files on the Q-35 basically make it sound like they were making a smaller easier-to-wield alternative to the P-94 in a true rifle form factor, and some of the files even mention the same Colonel Moretti contracting the project. So the generic plasma rifle is a production model variant of the Q35, probably made postwar by the Enclave or by whatever production capacity the Van Graffs have.

But we are talking about a retro 50's game world (none of the designs aged well...).

I know what you mean, and I like the new designs ~also, but the old designs would be there.
People would have an old P-94; or somebody would have dropped one in the sewer after they died fighting mole rats.

Then the Van Graffs found the one in the sewer. Not knowing what it was they used it and found out it sort of "cast" plasma bolts renaming it the plasma caster, and that is why there is only one.

I meant that they looked cartoony and simplistic. Back when graphics was very low-def because of the hardware limitations, and when video game art styles weren't as evolved as they are now.

A lot of it has to do with Bethesda making the series their own they had to build everything from scratch so why not update the designs a little and tweak things i either way some people will hate it no changes they get called lazy if they change anything well they changed it now it svcks. The retooling of the weapon system required new weapons anyway so they just came up with their own I thought it was a nice touch the new vegas added back some of the older weapons at around where lore puts them comparative to guns. The old designs also didn't age well it'd been what 11 years since fallout 2 the older designs seem rather common and boring for the most part since we've seen them a million times by now so they got replaced.

They were supposed to, its the style.

(Also the hardware limitation is not quite as harsh as you think ~Oblivion defaulted to the same resolution that Fallout used.)

So why update the established ones? It damages the continuity (and credibility).

Except... The original objects would exist in the world (alongside any new ones they cared to create). Returning fans would recognize them (and the continuity effort); New fans would pick what they liked and see it all for the first time.
