Lost magical ability?

Post » Sun Feb 03, 2013 9:08 pm

Greeting and felicitations, one and all.

I'm not a major magika user, but dable in the arts when necessary. Since arriving on Solstheim, I was able to use my favorite spells when necessary. However, since getting dragged to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Dragonborn:Apocrypha, I can't use magic. The spells appear, but won't load up. Nor can I use any staffs that I once could.

I checked the Active Effects list and nothing bad was there. I'm not carrying anything that I normally don't carry, except I now have the Companion perk.

Comments?

Was there a particular Black Book that did the dragging?

1. Check how much magic you have.

2. Change out the perk.

3. Try transforming into a werewolf/VL

4. Clear the cache on your box.

1. The bar is full, and Magic worked prior to Apocrypha.
2. Okay, I'll give that a try.
3. Why?
4. I'll give that a try as well.

Transforming can sometimes reset stuff. It's possible the game thinks you're already casting, and thus won't let you cast. Doing this may reset that.

Do a forward running power attack with a two handed weapon on one of the Raven Rock city guards then save your game and reload. Let me know how that works.

That will cause the guard to attack me. I don't see how that would fix my magic issue.

Okay, I can see your point. I'm not a VL (they're all dead), and don't care to be a Werewolf either. Got anything else? :)

Okay...have you ridden a horse or dragon, yet? If so, try that. It might do something similar to the transformation idea.

No, I tried to summon Arak, but it just poofed... so I'll try a real horse and see what happens.

I had issues of my characters' health being lowered (the part of the realm where you need candlelight) when returning back to Nirn. All I did was re-open the book to transport back Apocrypha (made sure I was in a light source) and then open the book to return back to Nirn. Took care of that problem. Thus, my thinking is that if you remember which book caused your issue try going to Apocrypha with that book (maybe do a cast spell there) and return back to see if that might solve that issue.

Wait...how much spell absorption do you have, and which spells are you trying to use?

If you mean level, its around 300. Nothing special, simple heal, heal others, summon Arak... using a lighting staff... nada... the spell appears in hand, and appears to load, but the magic level doesn't reduce and you get the squib sound when releasing it... poof...

Have you beaten DB yet, and if so, did you accidentally respec? Although staves should still work...you have a really strange problem, here.

No, I haven't started the MQ yet, just getting the lay of the land and doing the local quests to ramp up for the main even...

Tell me what it looks like.

Does your character go to cast, look perfectly normal, and then once it casts nothing happens? Can you use any scrolls?

Exactly. The hand raises, the spell looks to be loading, but the power bar only lowers a bit. And no, I haven't tried any yet.

Well, well! I have had the same problem! I also haven't been able to make use of the twin souls perk since entering Apocrypha... Only one at a time for me... But anyway, I tried to cast a spell, it gave the sound, but it wouldn't cast (staves wouldn't, either), just like you, my friend! However, when I went back to Skyrim to do one of Master Neloth's quests, it fixed, and I could use magic again in Solstheim; I've no idea why! It could have been that the glitch was theme rarely localized in Solstheim, but it worked when I went back. It could have been the simple act of fast traveling that did it. It also could have been that it was only a loading screen that did it, but I have no idea why it fixed.

In short, if you haven't already, try fast traveling back to Skyrim (not by boat) like I did.

Try riding a dragon. That might unbreak it.

FT'd back to Windhelm and made the rounds to my Fences in Solitude and Markath, FTing around Skyrim before returning to Lakeview. Stayed overnight at the home base with Sweetums and the kids, and FT'd back to Raven Rock. Reread the Winds of change, picked the Scholar's whatever and returned to reality. Nothing. Went back and picked Companions' choice again. Back to reality and still nothing. I"ve been to Apocolibrary again with a different black book, but haven't tried any magic yet.

1.) Have you reset your console yet?
2.) Have you loaded an earlier save to see if it worked then
3.) Unequip all of your gear, do a shout, sleep in a bed, drink a magic potion, use a scroll

I can wear no pants.

Ever since entering the DLC none of my characters can wear pants. Not a big deal but it gets chilly up in the northern part of the country.

It reminds me of equipping that mask in vanilla where it may your head disappear. Although I can still see my legs.

1. No. Are you referring to the pin in the whole type reset?
2. Don't have one that far back. DIdn't notice it wasn't working until several saves later. I don't save much more than the day's play (I save a lot during the day), but don't keep it for long.
3. No, Yes, Yes, Yes, No.
