Low sound, no sound? : V

Hi.

I run windows 7, on a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop. It works great gameplay wise, but there's one problem: the only sounds coming from the game are the voices. The game automatically installed a direct x driver I belive? But I wasn't at my pc while it was installing (I clicked it and walked away). It's not the low volume problem either, I turned up my volume to ear-shattering loud and there's no sound past the voices.

I'm not too tech-savvy, so I don't know what to do.
Also if a solution has been posted elsewhere, sorry in advance!

I see two things listed under 'sound' in my device manager:
AMD High Defenition Sound Device
IDT High Defenition Audio CODEC

I suppose I should mention I've tried playing with and without headphones. Same results.

- Go into Control Panel, then select Sound.

- You should have a listing here that says "Speakers" or something like it. Right-click it and go to "Configure Speakers".

- Set it to 5.1 Surround. Click on "Test" to make sure these settings will work. Click on Next, and make sure everything here in UNchecked if you're using headphones or if you don't have a 5.1 setup. Click on Next, then Finish.

IF that doesn't work:

- Right-click the Speakers again under "Sound", this time go to Properties. Click on the Enhancements tab and select "Loudness Equalization".

- Tried doing the first thing.... I don't have the option to set it to 5.1 setup, not that I have one.

- Tried the second thing and... nope, didn't work.

EDIT: Tried doing the second thing with the loudness equalization and it even made the voices dissapear.
