LulzSec is back

Well, seems like LulzSec has returned, and moved beyond the DDOS attack! Not content to merely shut down one of Rupert Murdoch's paper's websites, the hacking group has instead planted a bizarro-Onionesque account of the mogul's death-by-palladium on a Times redesign page masquerading as The Sun. Well played, #AntiSec.

The the hack was first announced by AnonymousIRC with a tweet, saying:

"We have joy we have fun we will mess up Murdoch's Sun: http://www.new-times.co.uk/sun/ | Hi Rupert! Have fun tomorrow at the Parliament! #AntiSec"

The fruits of today's Sun UK hack are starting to dangle down: LulzSec (out of retirement?) and Anon are tweeting logins of some serious British media brass. Foremost? Rebekah Brooks, the epicenter of England's voicemail hacking scandal. Update: phone numbers!

The tweet divulged the email and password info for one Rebekah Wade—Brooks' maiden name—along with many others from Murdoch's tabloid upper crust:

I knew they were just lying low for a while. Oh well, the more vocal they are, the less time it'll take for the authorities to catch them.

As for the Sun, well they could have definitely picked a more dramatic target for their "sudden" return. I'm in the US and even I know that the Sun, like most tabloids, is good for little more than entertainment value and/or toilet paper.

No, they revel in the fact that they piss everybody off.

The exact opposite, I think. They're trolls with hacking skills, so they revel in the publicity. I'm going to repost a metaphor I made last month in one of the LulzSec threads:

"Trolls are just the internet equivalent of a 2 year old jumping up and down in public screaming "ME! ME! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" LulzSec is that with hacking tools."

You do know that so far all the "leaked" information about them has proven false? The stuff the "web ninjas" posted was either just plain wrong or they were working with/for LulzSec.

They chose that because of Rupert Murdoch's scandal right now. It was probably the weakest of his assets security-wise.

the only reason I can think of that they would hack The Sun is because of the recent outrage over the murdoch news empire thing, and maybe they are trying to attach themselves to that... and act like their white hat hackers, which is what I meant by them pretending they never pissed every one off.

EDIT: DEFRON got me :ninja:

There are other ways to trace people than waiting for a freelance hacker to find the info for you, if the government(s) are trying to find them at all, then I'm sure they're doing a lot more than watching TheJester's Twitter feed.

As long as they're taken seriously by the authorities, they'll be found soon enough. They haven't really made much of an effort to cover their tracks.

As for Murdoch, I have absolutely no respect for the man left. What little I did have vanished and dropped into the negatives after the News of the World scandal. I still oppose LulzSec on principle, but they could have ticked a lot more people off (which is their goal, remember) by picking a different target.

I'm assuming you have documentation which proves this? I'm not saying the information is correct, but it's all we have to go on currently.

So now you know they are stupidly not using Onion routing and/or VPNs? These things range from hard to virtually impossible to track users through. The few anonymous hackers that have been caught lately are all probably either low-levelers or slipped up stupidly somewhere.

Hiding yourself on the Net is easy if you want to right now.

 all this recent stuff about his media empire is actually been known, just lacking hard evidence. Murdoch originally had a similar media monopoly in Australia but he had to give it up because his ethics were so horrible he simply could not operate his business standards in australia because conflicts with regulations. not sure on the specifics of that, other than in australia your not allowed to have/own/run media outlets in more than one country at a time was what it boiled down to.

I'm not even sure if they have any real skill. All a DDOS attack requires is a botnet, which isn't too hard to acquire. Its kind of embarrassing how easily some people get svckered into giving out passwords and things. And I'm pretty sure there are plenty of tools out there which can do SQL injection attacks with minimal input from the user.

We know of the sites the succeeded with, but don't know how many they tried .

I'm just making an educated guess based on their previous actions. Someone who gloats about committing felonies on a Twitter feed isn't really concerned about staying in the shadows. So yes, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they weren't. Regardless, if they get enough people after them, eventually one of them will slip up (one of their members has already leaked info on the group once, hopefully it happens again) and get himself arrested. All it takes is one member telling a friend or family member what he's been up to (since they've already proven beyond a shadow of a doubt they can't keep their mouths shut) and that friend/family member going to the proper authorities. It doesn't all have to deal with virtual tracing; old-fashioned investigative work can work just as well, especially with idiots who like to gloat.

and once they are caught, most people will be; meh. I honestly don't care much about lulzec news simply because they've already proven themselves to be oportunistic parasites who are the only ones that are amused by their actions.

By taking down their websites for like 20 minutes. Terrorists can't cause terror without their website up apparently...
