LulzSec takes down Eve Online, Minecraft and League of Legen

Post » Fri Jun 17, 2011 7:26 am

Can someone explain to me the difference between "hacking" and "cracking"? From what I understand, crackers are usually the ones you see end up in jail for a few years.

Crackers try to remove copyright protection from software so they can get it for free.

Hackers break into a system by searching for holes in the system's security, and then download data/denial-of-service/upload viruses or malware/spyware.

No.

Crackers are the ones who do the system breaking&corrupting for an ulterior motive.
Pirates are the copyright avoiders.
'Hacker' has basically turned into a blanket term used to describe anyone who uses an electronic device or software for an unintended purpose.

And apparently all hackers are evil.

Pretty broad definition to generalize everyone under it as evil :P

Those *************************************. Now I have to make up 18 more passwords. UGH!

I made a username for bioware's old forum when I got Mass Effect 1 for PC but I did not get an email. Should I change everything anyway? I can't find the old forum anyway.

Edit: Gizmodo released a feature where you can check to see if your email address was compromised in the recent theft of 62,000 usernames.

Ugh, Gizmodo runs too many scripts for my liking. Not going to check, don't want to give myself more problems if Gizmodo scripts are malicious, too.

I took my NWN product keys off my NWN Bioware user profile years ago, and I haven't logged in since forever. =/ I don't think I even use the email address it is tied to anymore, though I do check it once every month or so. Should I be worried?

Here is the online documentation: http://keepass.info/help/base/index.html
To generate a password: http://keepass.info/help/base/pwgenerator.html
To create a portable version of keepass: http://keepass.info/help/base/configuration.html

Don't over complicate it. It's a really simple program, and the easiest way to learn how to use it is to make a temporary database, and tinker around with it. Once you have it figured out, make your real database, and go with it.

THANK YOU!

I'm using it right now. It's simple actually.

That's what I was thinking, NoScript blocked off more stuff than I've ever seen on a site (including things I haven't seen anywhere before). There's an alternative list http://dazzlepod.com/lulzsec/.

I've got a slight problem. I can't seem to be able to locate any of these files:

Configuration Location Typical File Path
Global Application Directory C:\Program Files\KeePass Password Safe\KeePass.config.xml
Global (Virtualized) Windows Vista/7 Virtual Store C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\KeePass Password Safe\KeePass.config.xml
Local User Application Data C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\KeePass\KeePass.config.xml
Enforced Application Directory C:\Program Files\KeePass Password Safe\KeePass.config.enforced.xml

No such directory exists. I've copied the files I downloaded to my pendrive, and now I want to locate that keepass.config file.

Also, aren't I supposed to also copy the database file I created? That's the file which contains all the passwords. If I don't copy it how will my pendrive be of use? I can't seem to find any instruction which tells me to copy it to the pendrive.

Interesting data posted by th3j35t3r earlier, very interesting indeed.

Seems they also just re-uploaded the 62,000 usernames/passwords.

Lulzsec seems to have a special something with videogames.

Most of their targets are based on the video game industry.
Game servers, sites of videogame developers, journalistic sites that cover video games news...

They have showed to us that they have power.
If only they could use it for a good purpose...

For example what they did with the pormo site they hacked, where they revealed that people who work for the government where using tax payer's money to watch porm videos...
That was funny IMO and they did well to uncover it to people.

On the other hand I can't understand why they attack gaming so much.
Gaming is fun and fun is good. And breaking another's fun isn't good.

On Lulzsec's twitter I'm seeing people who have used the private information to impersonate other people (even stealing money from paypal in some instances). Just as bad IMO.

Yup, this is getting worse and worse every single day. And not just PayPal either, Xbox Live accounts, Twitter accounts, Facebook, PSN, Netflix etc... I really do hope the feds step in.

Speaking of which, is there any way to report them to law-enforcement? I assume they've already been informed, but typically it's never good to let something like this go unreported.

Also, as to what th3j35t3r posted, apparently he has strong evidence that LulzSec is made up of Anonymous members.

Ok, I'm looking at my own set up, which is on my hard drive, not a USB drive...

My application directory is at C:\Program Files (x86)\KeePass\
The configuration and the database files are in this directory by default, although I keep my database file in a folder in my Documents folder.

And yes, you want to put the database file on your USB drive. That is the file you want to protect, so it is the most important file to move there.

I've got no keepass folder in my program files directory. =/

I extracted keepass to My documents. Those files which I extracted I copied to the pendrive. I've also moved the database file to the pendrive. However, I can't find find this application data file (keepass.config). The only keepass.config file I've got was the one I extracted, but this needs to be overwritten by the other keepass file I'm looking for. What gives? I'll run a search now.

EDIT: Search gives nothing, except for the file I extracted.

WAIT

I am using an extracted version which was linked to in this thread. I haven't installed anything. I may be using the portable version...

I'm using the Firefox plugin, which installs it to the C: directory mentioned but there are other files found at: C:\Users\{USER NAME}\AppData\Roaming\KeePass on W7. A Keepass.ini file and a KeePass.config.xml. Those the ones you need?

Yes and no, as in LulzSec broke off from AnonOps to hit higher-risk targets.

Yup, you are using the portable version. I used https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keefox/ to simplify things. It will install KeePass for you, and adds an easy to use toolbar for KeePass ease of access. Though I also keep the portable version on a USB with the database file. If you switch which one you use, you need to pint it to the database again but after that it will remember til you use the other version again.

You can download the installer version of KeePass to to avoid KeeFox, or if you use something else.
