why would you want to marry Lydia? all that woman ever did for me was just get in the way and couldn't keep up with me. i find it hard to believe that she would even be smart enough to cook a meal and open a store let alone make any money. imo there are plenty of other people that are better options.

That's what every single follower in the game is like. They're basically only useful for carrying heavy stuff, since their pathing is so awful.

According to Bethesda's official Strategy Guide you SHOULD be able to marry Lydia. But in-game the dialogue options just don't come up. It's a bug, sadly. Other Housecarls can be married. Jordis for example I had no problem with triggering options for.
