I've not long started the Mage's quest at the College of Winterhold and I was hoping to get some better robes. I can buy them from certain members but I'm not paying over a 1000 Septums for them. Does anyone know where to get some for free. Either Illusion or Conjuration, I'm not interested in Blue Mage's Robes or Black Robes, just the ones they sell at the College.

Just stay on the colleges quest line. You'll get a few items that will set you up for most of the game.

OK, cool.

You could also wander round the wilderness a while. Before too long you'll be stumbling upon conjurers and necromancers wearing incredible robes with things like 75% more magicka regeneration.
