If your like me you put most of your points into magic and a few in to hp. You might take destruction and fancy alchemy or some other mage like route. But if you are a true hard core mage you ware no heavy armor, carry only daggers, maces and stave's. this means your armor is weak, your magic is strong and your melee is well....pathetic.

What tips, advice do you have for taking on dragons? I let giants deal with them.

Chain stagger. Dragons should not do ANY damage to you unless its a flyby spray.

Like he said, get the Impact perk. Keep hitting the dragon with dual-cast spells so that he staggers and staggers and staggers and rarely has an opening for attack.
