Mages on consoles...

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:43 pm

Just doesn't work... Well, they 'work' but when it comes to free flowing battle, no... Just.... No.

What I’m getting at is the fact that every few seconds you need to 'pause' to enter the favourite system, change your spell for the situation, heals, shouts, summons, in the end your battle turns into something worse than a turn based rpg, which completely killed battle immersion for me, hence i had to stop playing my mage, which i was really looking forward too the most...
So Bethesda, next time you decide to try a brand new UI, you may just need to invest a liiiittle bit more time into it... I suggest you scrap Fav's altogether and bring back Oblivions hot keys... Or find a way to have both.

If you could change this in one of your expansions, then but sadly i know it's just another one of those things that modders will end up fixing... And in a short amount of time too

P.S: Stop cutting corners

Well, in all fairness, there are two hotkeys on the console control for Skyrim that work like the Oblivion hotkeys and do not stop the action. I could never make good use of more than four Oblivion hotkeys because I couldn't get the diagonal hotkeys to work properly.

Honestly, I prefer the Skyrim favorite system to the Oblivion system, because in Oblivion I was always going into the menu to change spells because there just aren't enough hotkeys.

There are 2 hotkeys in the game currently, but I agree with the other posts that I prefer the fav system more than the hotkeys. Mainly cause I dont have a great memory and could never remember which hotkey I needed to change my flame spell to a heal spell etc,

Had this same problem. I liked the Oblivion hotkey system, in theory, but in practice, there were basically only 4 hotkeys on the 360 for me.

I would always forget what hotkey is linked to what. Hell, I have two hotkeys and I still mix them up.

Favourites aren't ideal by any means, but they're not too bad.

The fact that you are disorganised is your own fault.

I enjoy favorites a lot more than Oblivion's hotkeys. Much more fluid. Honestly though, it should only take you 3 seconds or less to enter the favorites and grab which spell you need. If its taking a lot of time, say 10 seconds or so, then maybe you just need more time to get used to it. After a while you don't even need to look, just opening the favorites and sliding down 3 spaces within a second and back to the action. Favorites are great in my opinion.

Hotkey's = PC really for multiplayer...

New system i prefer, maybe you must stop regularly to change spells but favourites system is preferable..

Hotkeys are for Ultima Online :frog:

I usually had 15 things I wanted to hotkey, but still. Favorites is stupid. It ruins the flow of combat. Hotkeys are in instant sort of change on the fly that works well with mages.

I've gotten so quick at getting to what I want in the Favorites menu that I don't even notice it anymore.

Obviously, hot keys would be better, but it was rather frustrating in Oblivion, always selecting the wrong spell or weapon because the d-pad didn't recognize diagonal presses properly.

I've made the favorites menu so damn fluid now though that I really don't notice I'm even going into it.

how is it fluid though? I cast stoneflesh, then move on to a destruction spell, maybe use a conjuration spell, use a healing spell, maybe a equilibrium spell, a destruction spell, back to a healing spell, onto another conjuration spell and go back in for a destruction spell. How is that fluid? It's like I'm trying to play a really laggy multiplayer, the action keeps stuttering. IT also doesn't help when I have a spell in the "C" section and then go to something thats near the end of the alphabet.

Favorites are alright, not great by a long shot, but they're decent. Really easy to clutter, but if you keep it organized... well. /shrug

Hotkeys... yes. More please. Not hard to do.

I would like triggers for mages actually, and combinations macro'd under a single input under favorites or hotkey.

Especially helpful for illusionists.

For that matter, it would help for all classes. Maybe a little too grandiose though.

Mix of favorites and at least 8 hotkeys seems reasonable enough, and easy to do on consoles and PC simultaneously.

What?! That's new to me... Will make my mage alot more fluent to play with. That's perfect. How do you equip said left and right on the D Pad? I feel like such a newbie sometimes, even after 250 hours

Make something a favourite. In the favourite menu, hold down the left or right button on the D Pad. You'll see 1 or 2 appear next to it :)

^ This exactly, the fact that you cant arrange the order of importance of your favs doesnt help at all... That would ease the pain a bit.

Gawd, still many things i dont know about this game, and i have logged about 300-400 hours <________> either way, this will only ease the pain very slightly, since if your a mage who plays on >Master< where enemys dont tend to die in 1 hit, you tend to change spells frequently... Just like what 'Commandant Oreo' describes in the above quote...

At first it didnt bother me too much, but as i got to higher lvls and started to get more and more spells.... It just didnt work, and could only mental block it for so long =/
Mages are still bloody fun, and its great to see the magic system revamped, but they needed to work on it just a little bit more... Like many other things in this game

I agree. I haven't been playing Skyrim for long, though, (compared with Oblivion @ 2 years), so perhaps I'll get more fluid accessing my favorites, but it does interrupt the gameflow for me a lot at the moment.
