Is magic still gimped?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 8:29 am

Sorry I haven't played since December, and I was wondering if Bethesda fixed magic in an update.

I left off with a high level mage, and my Destruction spells (with the Destruction tree maxed out) may as well have been dirty words. I.E. The were totally gimped.

So... Is magic still gimped?

A little bit. I can kill Deathlords by shaving his damage with Spark and Flames. I need to invest in some more magic, but Deimos's character doesn't really want to join the college.

I recently discovered that the aspect of terror perk boosts fire destruction damage a little if that helps you but magic is still gimped

Then my copy of Skyrim will continue to collect dust.

Thanks.

Title needs to say "Is Destruction Magic still gimped" because everything else is fine. I'm having way more fun on my Illusion/Conjuration Mage than I ever had on my Destruction/Conjuration Mage. Illusion makes Destruction look like a sad puppy.

I wouldn't go that far. It's an improvement in its core mechanics(excluding spellmaking- that's a different matter), but it needs more variety in spells and better scaling.
And Beth is almost certainly gonna add stuff to the magic system later on. They started to do so in the Game Jam week, so I'm sure we'll be seeing new additions to Skyrim's magic system

Yeah Destruction is pretty bad especially with spell cost but you can enchant to remove that problem. i have noticed if you slide to easy on the difficulty scale fireball is like a nuke against everything. They need to tweak magic so its bit more useful.

As said above, it still hasn't been addressed. People have devised ways to live with it, but they are basically a bunch of hoops to jump through to crutch the underlying problem. PC enthusiasts have modded the fix, and console is left currently high and dry.

Yes pure destruction is relatively gimped but a mage is fun - you need to use a range of schools.

That's easy, just forget things :hehe:

But he was asking about balance, that hasn't been changed.

Magic was never gimped.

It plays exactly how the developers intended.

Explain to me the term "gimping". I've only ever seen it used to describe roleplaying which obviously doesn't fit in this context.

My mage is very well rounded actually. Master in Destruction, Conjuration, and Alteration. Expert in Restoration and Illusion.

The problem is that my Destruction spells don't deal enough damage anymore, and I have very weak combat skills so I don't deal much damage that way either. So my battles take FOREVER.

I actually had to use the Alchemy/Enchantment loop (I'm on the 360, so no console commands) to make a pair of gloves to jack up my One-Handed skill.

I think what they need are debuff spells, maybe like an Adept level -15% to fire, frost, or shock for 30 secs, and an Expert level spell that works like fireball in that anything hit by it gets -25% to a particular element and anything within 15 feet gets -10%

My spellshield is a hair away from being 40 and I never thought I'd enjoy getting her up that high. One thing I've used quite a bit is Flame Cloak, so if any opponent gets close, they're not only getting nuked by my Fireball or Incinerate, they are also being burned by my cloak. Works pretty well.

It means that a skill is capped (either intentionally, or as an outcome of the system) and eventually becomes less and less useful as you level up.

In Skyrim you eventually reach a point where your Destruction magic cannot get any more powerful (happened to me around level 35), however your enemies continue to scale up.

Now I'm at level 48. So a battle with an Ancient Dragon takes forever, because he kills my summoned Dremora Lords in one shot, and shrugs of my Destruction spells like they're nothing.

So you've maxed out all available destruction spells?

I totally agree.

Yeah, I do that too. It's fine for certain encounters, but a high level Dragons still one-shot me, and it doesn't help against a high level archer who kills me in two or three hits if my Mage Armor wears off.

Yes. The best I have is Lightening Storm, but you can't move while shooting it, and it drains your magicka really fast.

Well, the mage armor perks in the Alteration tree needs to be revamped, honestly. It should cap at 500, so that if you take the Lord Stone you'd be at 550, pretty close to the cap.
