MAJOR problem wioth new 1.6x kit...... Please please help

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 8:47 pm

Greetings,

Ever since upgrading to 1.6 my game is now running BEAUTIFUL and perfect BUT the creation kit is cursed. Everytime I try to right click on ANY object and hit "edit" it takes over 10 minutes to bring it up. If I cahnge tabs on the object to see didfferent properties that is another 3 to 6 minutes per tab. Bringing my modding to a screeching halt. My system is workong perfect with all else including the main game. It is just the kit.

I already did the stem check files procedure. many times.

I am running a revo 3 hard drive with dual evga 590's and a 3.4 extreme processor . It ain't lack of hardware. I cringe at the thought of how long those 10 minutes would change if it was not a sdd drive.

Please , ideas .... I am thinking of reverting back to an old version? But see no uninstall or older versions offered. A clean install of the cklit would seem appropiate but I see no instructions anywhere to do so.

I really do not want to reinstall skyrim. It is fine tuned to a T with hte mods I want and finally working beautiful. No glithces at all.. How many people can say that? But Ineed the ckit.

Respectfully,

Tonycubed2

How much RAM do you have because the Creation Kit can use a ridiculous amount at times. Before I upgraded my Ram I had lots of problems with crashing and long load times.

On that note I've noticed since the upgrade that the CK is using about twice as much RAM as it did before 1.6, and it also leaks memory. I'm not sure why this is, but it may be related to your problem.

RAM's obviously not the issue, then, 'cause mine runs great (well, as good as it ever has, anyway) on 8GB.

You can uninstall the CK by going to Steam, View->Tools, right-click Creation Kit, choose Delete Local Content.

I saw that, but the words delete local content worried me. It won't delete scripts or mods or skyrim ini files?

It -shouldn't-, as Steam generally only deletes files that Steam creates, but I can't test that right now. Back up first? ;)

I've uninstalled the CK before to reinstall and it only touched the CK files. It left the Skyrim game files and any of my esp/esm's alone.

I have only 6gb and it runs smooth as butter, so it sounds like something got weird at some point and it's making it take forever.

Back up any modified vanilla scripts first, those WILL be lost if you've touched them.

Arthmoor: Well, you are correct. I read your post a few minutes AFTER I did it. :-( . Lost my modified PlayerSleepQuest BUT I did listen to Verteiron and made a full backup first.

Well, the uninstall and install were smooth as can be but no different. Taking over 10 minutes to open any record. sigh.... Maybe copy the install from a non upgraded pc? My son has not gone to 1.6 yet. I am getting kinda desperate.

update: downgraded to 1.524 and STILL no joy! Weird, huh? So the question now is : what dependencies does the creation kit have? What files does it share with the skyrim install that may have an effect? I know flash is involved,is there a version i twants?

Next step is total reinstall??

I know this may be a long shot but have you tried updating your graphics drivers?

Also I was under the impression that CK could only use 2gigs of RAM or am I dreaming this.. I only have 2gigs and since 1.6 it has actually speeded up especially on Ctrl F search and replace..

300dpi: Yup, I am running the newest Nvidia drivers for the 590 cards. However, that may bt the issue right there. I did so recently. Maybe it hates the new version. Will now for sure thursday when I upgrade to the 690 cards.

The CK is LAA and will use all the RAM you can give it. Unfortunately, it doesn't give it all back when you exit.

While the CK does have LAA, it's a 32 bit app. It will still hit a wall at 4GB.

Could it be a mod causing the problem? The edit problem happens even if only skyrim.esm is laded by itself.

update: renamed skyrim folder, let steam re-install game and creation kit. A perfect virgin install. Not one extra file or ini change. tested again. SAME RESULTS!

So something in the saved games folders? Or graphics drivers after all? Glad I did not just delete my normal install.

Sorry Arthmoor, but I have to disagree with you on that one. I've actually witnessed it use over 10 GB of free memory before finally crashing, due to low resources. I'm quite sure that anybody with a 64bit OS will report the same findings, ie. that it can, and does use way over 4GB.

I do have a 64 bit OS though, and Bethesda has specifically said it's a 32 bit app. They couldn't very well ship a 64 bit CK and expect everyone to be able to use it. Especially when the game isn't a 64 bit executable either.

If you've got something I can throw at it to cause it to exceed 4GB, I'm game to see the spectacular explosion.

I know it's a 32bit app, but for some reason, it can and does manage to use any amount of memory that's marked as free (not available). I'm not sure why, or how. Possibly something to do with paging memory as it goes. The one thing I do know for certain, it doesn't free the memory after exiting the program.

If you really wanted to, you could try generating meshes, normal textures and diffuse textures for a 8192x8182 world. There was no spectacular explosion, just a total OS lock up when the amount of free memory hit around the 200MB mark. It started off with around 10500MB (clean boot) free memory. It took a long time before it crashed (around 3 hours if I remember correctly) and it was CK 1.4. The new CK 1.6.89 seems to be a lot faster (optimised code ?) that the older version, but I haven't tried anything as big on the new version yet.

It is possible to have 32bit applications use more than 4Gb RAM using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_Windowing_Extensions. While I don't know if the CK uses AWE, reports of it taking up more than 4Gb RAM make it likely.

I have no idea, but it sounds like a possibility. Especially the bit -
An application must have the Lock Pages in Memory privilege to use AWE
which might explain why the memory isn't freed up when exiting.
