Making an android character...

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:43 pm

Hello everyone, I've been thinking a lot about a character build which I've really wanted to try out for quite a while now. I've recently finished re-reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (which later became on to become the fantastic Blade Runner), and as such I think it's time to attempt to create an android character. I've been having a good think about what skills the character would need but it's proving extremely difficult. So far I think Energy Weapons is a good fit for a main weapon skill (melee/unarmed was briefly considered but I don't think it fits my style of play).

Other than that though, I really don't know where to go with this character build. The general character story I had my head for this one was a character who doesn't know they are an android, much like the android in the Replicated Man quest from Fallout 3. I don't think the character would have abilities which are significantly more evolved than the average human (the androids in the Replicated Man quest certainly didn't) which leads me to believe I'm overthinking this and I should just create a standard energy weapons using character and roleplay the rest, but I'm not sure.

The problem I'm finding is that there is so little to go on, since Androids (to my knowledge) have only been mentioned in Fallout 3 and that's it. So I'd appreciate any input you lovely members of the forum can provide.

Thanks and I appreciate any feedback.

It's been a while since I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but I seem to recall that the androids were so human like that they sometimes didn't even know they were androids. This would seem to open up an android character to be anything, just like a human.

It would help to explain surviving the head shot at the beginning though.

Also the Replicated Man android in FO3 was supposed to have great reflexes, so maybe a lot of agility?

I would have him go Energy weapons, and science. But thats a hard character to perfect. Just give it a test run and refine from there

I'd say put more points into intelligence, agility, endurance and strength and remove a lot of points from luck and charisma.

I think the fun of your build will be in the choosing of perks. I'm thinking high endurance (DT, Rad resistance, and

implants
), agility (APs and reflexes), and perception (extra sensory apparatus?) at the expense of charisma and intelligence--I'd say robots are slow learners and might have some people skills defecits. Luck and Strength I'd find hard to gauge: you're either really unlucky that you're a 'droid or maybe because you're a droid luck is just an extension of a logically programmed mind (ie you can count cards); Strength, well Blade Runner made the Replicants fairly strong, but average is probably right.

I'd go Energy weapons (handy for low strength) or Unarmed melee, Science, and Repair (seems like mechanics would be perfect for bots) as tag skills.
Traits: Built to Destroy +3% criticals vs. 15% deterioration and Good Natured +5 to your INT related skills (some knowledge from basic programming)

Perks: lots of cool android vibe ones, but things like Toughness, Rad Resistance, Adamantium Skeleton, and Robotics expert seem appropriate.

Cool concept. I hope it's fun!

I'm thinking the flaw in this is that when the doc patches you up, he may well just notice that the inside of your head isn't quite right :P

Or is that the part where he/she finds out for the first time?

Thanks for all the comments everyone, you have been a big help in helping me shape this character. I think in response to how does the character find out they are an android, well I've been contemplating whether it's best to get it out at the start with Doc Mitchell telling the character they are an android, or that he fixed them up and decided not to tell the character for whatever reason so that they may find out at a different stage, I'm not really sure yet. Either way you have given me something to think about. Thanks :)
