Making a new melee character

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 11:41 pm

As the title says, i am wondering which play style to use sword and shield, two swords, battleaxe, mace, longsword etc.
Which is the most enjoyable and interesting and should i invest in one handed or two handed depending on the answer?

I'm a pretty big fan of the Dual Swords, or Sword & Dagger combo. I've also been toggling the idea of dual axes a little bit. Wonder if that'd make me even more of a beast...

We can't tell you what you find the most enjoyable or interesting. Only you can answer that question.

What I found the most enjoyable and interesting was a 2-Hand Warrior wielding a sword, wearing light armor, using no magic, no shouts, no Alchemy, and no Enchanting.

It depends upon your play style. I prefer dual-wielding because I play spastically and just slash like crazy. Swords and daggers have really cool finishing animations, but I've never seen the others so they may be cooler...never bother checking YouTube for them though. :P

I always liked the rush of taking on groups of enemies with a shield and 1H weapon. It requires the most timing in my opinion and that makes it more fun in the long run.

Right on..

Well, besides the lack of Shouting, I've found the same.

Yeah. On the right side are the dual wielding perks.

...and you can't block. That was unclear to me when I started my 1st character - I don't understand why we can't use our off-hand weapon like a main gauche. :P

I did fine on my warrior-type, but I smithed the best armor and weapons (ie had a full set of Legendary Ebony armor and swords at level 21 or 22). I had to use potions every now and then until I enchanted my armor.

I have a wood elf I dual weld with. Yeah he died a lot until I joined the Dark Brotherhood and got a set of shrouded armor. That changed the whole game for me. Now I rarely get into a head to head fight with anything, just sneak up backstab or one shot or use my bow. Except for dragons, of course. For dungeon crawls I'll hire a meat shield. That's tons of fun, he takes the hits while I remain hidden, sneak up and backstab. :)

And if you do play the stealthy type, the game gets much MUCH better as you level up. But you take your lumps as a lowbie. It's like paying the price for becoming a demi-god. ;)

Every since I first saw the load screen with the Orc with two axes I have been enamored.

Dude. I. Want. That.

My assassin chick is like that...but I also keep a set of Legendary Forsworn armor on her (smithed past the Armor cap and Enchanted - don't judge me ) just in case. :P

This. BUT I prefer Light Armor. Certain perks that help with your stamina which is major if you're bashing/power attacking alot. Plus it's easier to maneuver around instead of being in clunky Heavy Armor (that is til you get the perk).

But 50 (Light) > 70 (Heavy) for that perk IMHO.

Other then that? Spellsword. Sword in one hand, spell in the other.

I never calculated Ratios per se, but I probably did Health:Stamina 3:1 or 2.5:1. Each time I leveled I just looked at Health and Stamina and if Stamina looked oddly low to me I put the 10 points into it. Swords use a fair amount of Stamina for Power Attacks, but nothing like 2-H weapons.

Have to agree there. Why it's different from an off-hand dagger I have NO clue.

Ah. My favourite combination is a pair of War-Axes. I think most of them, especially Orcish and Daedric look really cool, and better than the swords which is unusual.
Not certain that they have better base stats, but I'm pretty sure they do.

One handed, I do better playing sword and board than I do double wielding. The shield's great for bashing and staggering an enemy who's getting ready to unleash an attack, giving you a window to launch a much more effective counterattack with the weapon. Two-handed is good for stronger enemies who need heavier damage dealt to them, and two-handed weapon blocks are much more effective than one-handed ones (though still not nearly as effective as blocking with a shield).

My melee character's favorite one handed weapon is an improved Orcish war axe for now, but he's still only Level 15. His two-handed weapon of choice is an improved Skyforge steel warhammer, but he's already lusting for Volendrung. He'll be getting it soon.
