The title says it all. It's a very interesting article--I'd give it a read. Also, the picture of the guy is hilarious. :P

Very funny picture.

That's a pretty sad situation the poor guy was in, and to do that had to take alot of guts... I salute this Sheogorath look alike!

Then he plans to spend a few years in jail, before getting out in time to collect Social Security and move to the beach.

I'm not sure if I ought to be offended or amused by this.

His situation however isn't hilarious. Millions cannot afford the high costs of medical care, even some who are insured. It's a sad fact, people in the US go bankrupt from medical bills.
I can't really discuss the health care situation any further without it getting political, thought.
I hope that he gets the treatment he needs while incarcerated, I suppose for him, desperate times called for a desperate measure.
The article didn't mention whether or not it was armed robbery.

He was only charged with larceny; if he had a weapon he would have received a more serious charge.

err... i'm losing my Access to Care this month, which is a program to help people get free health care if they don't have an income or access to medical coverage... so i hope i don't have to resort to the same thing...

Good thing I'm young, healthy (relatively speaking), have no pre-existing conditions, and am majoring in a white collar field. This health care system could remain broken for another 20-something years and I won't even notice :D

well, he is inventive, maybe if he was allowed the opportunity to apply that in his life, he'd not need to resort to this.

not that i agree with him doing what he did; he could have applied that inventiveness and come up with something else. like, MediShare(for which he'd not qualify--membership requires one to be a Christian), but minus the faith part, like, i don't know, other like minded like him share in on each other's bills. but yeah, in this age, the concept of anything that remotely resembles reciprocity is almost unheard of.

Thanks, I wasn't sure whether or not it was because he only took a dollar, but the teller was scared enough to go to the hospital.
It makes sense, armed robbery is a felony.

Isn't it a little presumptive to assume he wouldn't qualify for medishare?

Anyway, it's really sad when someone has to go to jail just to receive proper medical care. Outside of health care reform, this makes me wish we had a greater abundance of free/low-cost clinics in this country.

The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out.

...

Gad, some people are so easily scared. Unless...she did this simply to increase his chances of arrest.

This is nothing new, it happens with some frequency. Also known to happen is homeless people starting fights so they can get a free meal and a night's shelter in jail.

probably is presumptive, good point, thank you. but i seriously don't think he'd be qualified; generally, you have to be a professing and practicing Christian and they sometimes get verification from your church time to time or at the beginning or something like that. and if he was all that, then i'd think he'd sooner be pointed to and apply for the said MediShare than do what he did.

that picture is pretty goofy.

I am surprised they are keeping him in jail though, he wasn't violent and even though he said he'd do it again if they let him out it's not like he will do any thing then demand a dollar again and sit in a corner.

I hope he gets his back and foot checked if he hasn't already.

Because like it said in the article.....He'll strike again!!!!

Always funny to find loop holes around a flawed system.

I can't reply with the full force of what I feel for fear of it getting extremely political. Lets just say I wish we were more like Canada, Australia or most of Western Europe in our approach to health care access.

The worst part is that a thing like this should have to happen the dude suffered from the economy with a hefty blow that knocked him over all he wanted was his health so it seems for now but the truth is it's the banks fault they're the ones responsible for this they've been cheating and lying and throwing this economy of ours in the U.S. into hell just so they could line there pockets...it's sad really i hope that soon in the future these problems will be fixed for the future generations because right now it's only going to get worse i saw a diagram showing the cycle of the economy and it says recovery, prosperity, recession and depression...that means a depression is coming. But after the depression comes it will eventually end with hopefully improvements to our economy and a better life for the future generation. This dude falls under the category of people who i think need and deserve health care, he's not a crackhead who doesn't have a job.
