Markarth Guards Problem

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 4:48 am

Well I've done the "No One Escapes Cidhna Mine" quest (at level 20ish), and had all my crime in The Reach cleared. I was cool for a while, now I'm at level 51 and am back in Markarth and bought the house and all that, and become thane, and all of a sudden the guards are all over me. They aren't attempting arrest on sight, but they do recognize me, and demand I stop when I go by them, only to ignore me if I don't engage them.

If I engage them, it doesn't matter that I'm thane, and also I can't persuade them (speech 100). They immediately want to take me to jail.

How do I get past this? Do I have to just go to jail? My bounty in the Reach is only 9, and yet they are all over me. I was even made thane WHILE the guards were all over me. Is this a glitch, or just an unfortunate aside to having helped the forsworn escape?

I mean, I guess if I never stop to engage the guards, its no big deal, but I'd like to quit hearing "By order of the Jarl, I demand that you stop!" every time I walk by a guard in my new hometown.

The same thing happened to me after I finished that quest. I walked in to the temple of Talos or whatever in Markarth and they attacked me.

This is a glitch that I think was supposed to be taken care of by the recent patch. If you are on PC, you can probably use the console to get rid of your bounty and it may go away. Otherwise,
Spoiler
you're going to have to have the guards replaced by either completing the Stormcloak quest for liberating the Reach or by giving Markarth to the Stormcloaks in the main quest.
You may still be periodically stopped by the guards, but they will not hound you or be hostile. Hope this helps.

Haven't tried that (mostly because the price is ridiculous (around 1000 septims) for a 9 bounty. I'll try that if push comes to shove.

I would be okay with them acting like that if I immediately saw the effects after the quest. But I went back and forth to Markarth for 30 levels, before all of a sudden having the guards turn on me. That makes no sense.

If your character level is up in the thirties, you probably have 1000 septims to spare for sure.

Yeah, my bounty is only 9 for the hold, which triggers the aggressive responses, for some reason. If I'm so bad, shouldn't my bounty be much higher?

Well yeah, I have over 300K septims at level 51, but thats not the point. :) I don't want to fill the guards coffers when I should be able to get off scott free as a thane! :D

By the way, yes I've tried to pay them off now, and they still don't take it. It looks like I'm forever branded an enemy of Markarth!

But if I had (that's if) a house there with stuff in it that I wanted to get to and the guards went all berserk on me I'm afraid they'd all have to die. Every last one of them. Just "Fus Do Ra" them off a narrow and very high part of the city. It's kind of fun, and taking them on can be a great way of leveling up your armor and blocking skills. Last very bugged playthrough with the Farkas (My Enemy/best friend) bug I had a 50,000 bounty in Markarth. I was up to lvl 54. I'd like to see them try to collect it. All because of that stupid Cidna Mine incident. I didn't want to go to the mine. So this time I didn't even open the initial letter that starts the Forsworn Conspiracy.

I've had the same problem since release and it's one of the main reasons I can't play this game anymore since every quest I have left is "Go to Markarth".

Edit- As far as I know there is only one way to fix it but it didn't work when I tried.

There was a way to avoid this when you first escaped the mine. Don't go outside for an hour and the guards will not associate you with the escape.

A guy I know who plays on PS3 cleared this glitch by getting to the shrine of Talos without alerting the guards in town (which was a real PITA, according to him - he had to use invisibility potions and muffle spells to sneak by them without alerting them), killing two of the three guards at the shrine and then yielding to the third. It cleared his bounty and transported him back to the center of town, and the guards started acting normally again. It's a pretty common glitch that's supposed to be fixed with the 1.4 patch.

I've avoided doing the quest myself until it's fixed.

ETA - he was approached by the NPC who offered to clear his bounty, coughed up the gold, and it didn't help.
