X-mas bonuses

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:07 am

Was sweating over how I'd pay my college bills and have money for X-mas presents this year when I decided to check up on how much I got paid this month expecting it to be the same as last month and the month before that and the month before that and...

awesome X-mas bonus is awesome, I really forgot that my company does this yet I also got one last year and the year before. Really it's evil for my college to collect payments for the semesters at the start of December but the bonus covers it up for me nicely and gives me a little something extra to buy something nice for my parents and siblings this X-mas :)

Anyone else had a pleasant surprise (or even just an expected non-surprise) from their company at the start of this month ? And do you think it should be expected of a company to give a bonus at the start of December or is it just a moral boosting nice extra ?

Edit: I wonder if Bethesda has X-mas bonuses...

Well I'm a freelance designer.... so no.

But at least I don't have to book time off for holidays and I can wake up whenever I please. Oh and a recliner beats an office chair any day of the week :P

But a Christmas bonus would be mighty welcome right about now...

Somehow I doubt my company gives out christmas bonuses. On the bright side I finish half an hour early every day

The company I'm currently working for allows for store managers to put a Christmas party on company expenses (at reasonable cost, of course), which I suppose is a X-mas bonus in a sense. I wasn't even aware of it until my manager asked where I would prefer to go for our meal- it was quite a pleasant surprise. As far as I'm aware the only other seasonal bonuses are paid to management, otherwise any other "extra" pay if applicable arrives as monthly sales commission. I'm not really too interested in "bonuses" as such though, as they shouldn't be relied upon- I'd just prefer a slightly higher base pay rate instead.

I am getting a lump-sum payment sometime this month, which has the "feel" of a bonus, but since it's part of a union-negotiated contract and in lieu of a pay raise this year, it most definitely is not... It's actually more like a kick in the pants, to be honest. I'm hoping this is the only year I get a "bonus".

Unfortunately we don't get our bonuses at my company until around February (after performance reviews are completed). The main thing that occurs before Christmas in my industry tends to be firings/layoffs. Merry [censored] Christmas.

I'll get my bonus when my boss comes back from vacation -- he likes to give them out himself.

I'm not expecting any sort of bonus this financial year. Our margins aren't what they could be.

Just got told today I got a 50 cent raise. I'm up to the price they wanted to hire me at (2 months ago) but, due to some reason or another, they had to keep me 50 cents lower. I guess now it's ok. Yay for more money!

Wait what ? And just when does your boss come back from vacation ? I thought the purpose of X-mas bonuses was to help with extra expenses around the X-mas festivities due to gift, decoration, tree, awesome food... etc... buying and such.

So does he like come out of his vacation before X-mas then ?

My employers were often right Scrooges, often using the most tenuous of excuses to con the staff out of end-of-year bonuses. The annual "Christmas is cancelled" message where they stated that no funding was to be provided for Christmas dinners out also added to the festivities. For the record, the worst culprit was DEC under the wobbly stewardship of Bob Palmer, just to name the guilty; though my previous employer, Philips, were great: not so much for the bonuses but because they'd always stage an annual piss-up and put up the inevitably disgracefully-behaved staff in hotels overnight.

We're not designers, but it's kind of the same for us. :D In fact we "lose" money because clients on vacation/closed offices = less work for us.
Even if we got a Xmas bonus, it'd just be used to pay our self-employment taxes in April.

Hubs used to be w/a company who did do bonuses tho, and yup, it's definitely fun when you get them. :)

Everytime someone goes on holiday we all get cakes and other sweet foods, this could count as some sort of bonus, maybe for putting up with said people :P

I think he comes back the 19th, and yes, he takes a vacation around this time pretty much every year.

Not a Christmas bonus as such, but I'll be getting stock options around that time.

Beginning next year I'll get them to give me a fuel card, so that will be another nice bonus/raise.

Oh, okay, not too bad. 5 days before X-mas :P

Aside from this discussion I wonder if I lucked out with a workplace, I'm only a weekend worker since I have to attend college yet it wasn't so long ago that I and the rest of the workers got invited to eat at a restaurant where the company payed the bill and everyone seems to get a bonus yes they have way more workers than they need (my boss doesn't seem to have the heart to turn down people who apply with her for a job there...)

We normally get bonuses but my boss gave me a mini bonus before I went on holiday because she said I'd gone above and beyond her expectations with something.

So I don't know if I'll still get my Christmas one. We normally get ours with our December salary though...

It's quite likely that I'll be giving my boss a Christmas bonus this year.

My resignation.
