Massive save files + corruption?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 3:07 pm

Hi guys,

Just wondering if any other PC players has gotten this same problem?

My last few save files are + 600MB each. Load times are now between 3-5 minutes long, and once loaded, the game is no longer stable. Crashes when bringing up the in-game menu.

I've even done the 'remove and reinstall each mod one by one to see which one is crashing' trick but alas, same error. Even on Vanilla. I have now lost a character of over 150+ hours of play time, not even the main quests completed yet.

Reloading an old save file, however, (all >6MB) are working perfectly fine, even with all mods installed. But this last save is my character 22+ hrs in, thus destroying the want to play Skyrim again.

Anybody know what would cause the massive size of the save file? I was told it may be because Skyrim doesn't clear out 'dropped' items, which is true ,as i have found daggers / swords i've left lying around in the streets of Whiterun i have dropped from early in-game, so i guess that may be a factor.

Unsure if this is the same 'big file size'trouble PS3 owners were having, but having a thorough search online doesn't bring up any results for PC, seems like i am the first.

Any help on this?

Skyrim 1.5
Phenom x6 1045
GTX 560ti (900mhz)
8 GB 1600 DDR

Well for one thing, that is a huge save file. I'm pretty sure you didn't want another person to state the obvious though, lol. What mods do you have installed? I might
be able to give you more imput if ya let me know.

Shade,

Thanks for the reply. I did suspect mods at first, but as stated in the OP, i even tried running vanilla on the massive file save, and it still crashes. However, on the old save file that is only 6MB, i can run that fine with all mods, no crashing. I don't think its conflicting mods but then again, i could be wrong.

I've even culled down the mods to what i consider the 'bare essentials', but it's still quite lengthy. I can post it if need be.

Gonna have to point to mods.

This is not the first thread where someone has a huge save file. 600 MB and only 22 hours...that has to be a mod right?

My saves have never gone over 13 MB ....I have 227 hours on this character and level 51.....When you find out what mod killed your game ...let the author know...

Yes,listing the names of the actual mods you have installed would help (possibly) in pinpointing the issue you're having. Have you tried starting a new game and see if your game still has a huge save file?? If all else fails, you can try to uninstall/re-install Skyrim. If you don't want to lose your Saves, go to My Documents>Skyrim>Saves and copy/paste the Saves folder onto your desktop, or someplace safe. You may want to rename the Saves folder to something else before you uninstall Skyrim just so it doesn't find the copied Saves and deletes them.

** Be sure to never delete the first Autosaves that are created during the introduction scene/area. If you do, there will be serious issues when you play the game; in addition, be sure to delete some of the older save files so the Skyrim client doesn't have to load so many files before your current one (basically your game will take longer to load areas because the amount of save files adds up over time**

I saw there's another post regarding save game bloating, so it does seem it's happening to a few more people.

Re: mods, i've uninstalled all mods and ran vanilla on an old save, played with that for a while. It worked well. I then re-enabled a couple of mods, ran that on an old save, and it remained stable. New save files done from within the this old save keeps it at under 6MB, even with the mods re-installed. This makes me think that it wasn't the mods, but the save had corrupted and leaked somehow. Then again, i could be wrong.

Also, I have performed the uninstall / one by one install if the mods to see which one was crashing, did this with the old manual save. It didn't crash and remained stable.
