Massive Solar Blast happened earlier

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:25 pm

Nasa has published images of a big solar flash/blast that happened earlier today. There might be side-effects for the Earth as well, and a change to see Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights at this coming night. Also, this might have some effect on the Earth magnetic field, and might cause disturbs to electric networks.

But, what I'm hoping for is bright Northern Lights to light up the already-light Finnish summer night ^_^

Cool, hope there's no damage to anything important. Where exactly might you have to be too see the Aurora from this?

Maybe that's why it was so ridiculously hot on my way from school.

 it hasn't been said AFAIK, but I guess the more north/south you are on the globe, the more changes you have to see them, as the earth magnetic field lets more particles pass onto the atmosphere closer to polar regions.

Gotta love the SDO!

Aye, the Sun's revving up again on it's cycle. Dire predictions for an electronic age. But makes pretty nights :)

I usually go to Spaceweather.com for a quick snapshot of solar activity, but NOAA also has good stuff as well

Space is a dangerous place, sometime the sun will have a bad day and :flamed: (or atleast ":shocking:" :hehe:).

Everything is out to get us :ahhh:

This actually terrifies me as isnt a solar blast the indicator of cataclysmic events, if its truly as big as the article states than i am very nervous. Please someone quell my fears...

What sort of cataclysmic events?

Anyway, no, I'm 100% sure you're wrong because if there was a tiny bit of chance you're right the papers would have blown it out of proportion.

@hunter2121: I think the world isn't going to end anytime soon, especially not from a solar flare. We get hit by them all the time, and by ones of this magnitude quite commonly. There's silly theories about a massive solar flare that will destroy all technology on the planet or something like that, but the probability of something like that happening is incredibly slim to not even be worth mentioning...

More like continue watching FoxNews for a list of more things you should fear.

Cool stuff though, especially since sometimes here I can see the northern lights, so maybe if this clear day holds into the night, I can watch a bit of a show.

Solar blasts happen all the time. This was just a bigger one. I'm just off to outside with a camera to catch any possible auroras in the sky. But probably will just cause some problems with the networks and mild interference... inter... inter.. int.. int.. i... t. f.... i.... ..fe.... re...

I think you'd be suprised about the chances of solar weather causing problems... The Carrington Flare did some real damage back in its day (and even hurt people - Telegrapgh Operators), and I'd hate to see what it would do now. Admittedly Carrington was a once in a 500 year event, but given the greater reliance, I have a feeling a weaker flare (that is to say, weaker than Carrington but still relatively strong) could be worse.

Calm down, the sun wont start getting huge and swallowing planets for another 4 billion years.

I'm aware that solar flares can, and have, caused damage to our electrical infrastructure, but what I'm talking about are tinfoil type dooms day scenarios. A super massive solar flare that would would wipe out all the worlds electronics and put us into the dark ages and total anarchy would ensue, that type of thing. Solar flares do pose real risks, but something like that is a worst case scenario, bordering on absurdity. Thanks for the links though, good reading.

No auroras in Southern Finland so far, but it is very light outside, so that might block the auroras out of sight. And only thing that was interfering me was hordes of mosquitos.
