Max Damage Threshold

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:25 am

Figured I'd post this question in the GECK forum since you folks would be familiar with the inner workings of the game. What is the maximum Damage Threshold a player can get in un-modded Fallout: New Vegas through armor, perks etc? I know if Fallout 3 you could only get up to 85% Damage Resistance before new gear/perks stopped having an effect.

According to the GECK, the max possible trhough any armor combination is 90. As for how much items in game can get to, Im not sure.

The setting i looked at though was fMaxDamageResistance. I couldnt find a threshold setting, so I don't know if DR was re-coded into DT

Max Damage Resistance is set at 85%, but I think there's no limit for Damage Threshold.

The setting for DR in NV is set to 90, but again, Im not sure if that setting was changed for DT or is unused.

How come? I have GECK opened right now and it is 85% not 90%. You can use Damage Resistance and add it to armors if you want, but as you said, there's nothing about DT cap in GECK. So there's no limit for DT.

Ah, I see, the engine defaults to 90 but loading the esm and it changes to 85.

Well anyway the max DT i could come up with given game items only is ~41 via Enclave Shock Trooper armor

Damage threshhold is unliminted, but no matter what 20% of damage gets through it. So if your gun does 100 damage, even if the DT of the armor is 5000, 20dmg hits the enemy. But if their DT is 99, 100 dmg hits them, of course.

What? So if someone has 99 DT and my weapon has 100 Damage he will get 100 damage instead of 1 or 21?

20% automatically. If the damage is higher then your DT, you take full damage. Basically the round is piercing the armor cus its so strong. The 20% auto is balancing so its impossible to have a walking tank nothing can take down. Think of it as either taking damage from the shock or from it penetrating your armor. either way it hurts.

But didn't Tip during the loading screen said that it reduces damage equal to DT? Otherwise armors with 2 or 4 DT on beginning would be useless, because there's no weapon in game with so low damage...

You can +6 DT through Toughness perks and the highest-DT armor I've seen in the Geck is 35, with the highest DT helmet being 8. That makes a total maximum DT of 49. I don't think the 35 DT armor is actually possible to get in the game, though - I think the actual best armor would probably be around 25 DT, for a maximum total DT of 39.

In a modded game you could probably have a DT in the thousands if you really cared for it - I don't think there's anything limiting DT aside from the maximum value of the variable the game holds it in.

EDIT: If damage is higher than DT you do not take full damage. The damage is reduced by your DT to a minimum of 20% of the damage the weapon does. The function would look like this: DAMAGE_TO_ACTOR = MIN(WEAPON_DAMAGE - ACTOR_DT,WEAPON_DAMAGE*0.2)

That would defeat the purpose of DT if true... Bleh, the whole system is whacked.

Thanks Langy, you made things clear :)

Echonite, that way DT worked in FO1 and FO2, it was reducing damage by the amount of DT, although, you could hit for No Damage instead of 20% of damage.

Yes the DT 1 and 2 armors are useless. Would a cloth shirt protect you from anything? No. But coupled with maybe a stronger helmet you can get up to like 5, protecting you from things like clubs and bare hands.

Then that would be damage reduction, not damage threshold. A threshold is a minimum that must be met before something can start, if you are taking damage befroe the threshold is met, is it really a threshold?

It doesn't matter what the semantical accuracy of the terms are - Damage Resistance, in the F:NV engine, means the damage taken is reduced by DamageResistance%. Damage Threshold means the damage taken is reduced by straight DamageThreshold (Minimum: Weapon Damage*0.2). If you have a problem with these definitions, take it up with the programmers of the game engine - don't argue that just because they're called that means they work in exactly the way you'd expect from a literal reading of the words.

(and yes, in FO1+2+Tactics Damage Threshold reduced damage by the DT amount - it wasn't an actual 'threshold' where anything over that acted at 100% efficiency)

While we are on the subject, does anyone know how much of a boost to your DT you get when drinking whiskey with Cass' "Whiskey Rose" perk?

So just because I call you Cheese Guy, you are now Cheese Guy? It doesn't matter what your name is, because I'm using Cheese Guy instead, and that is your name, because I said so.

Threshold is defined as - "the starting point for a new state or experience" - IE, the starting point at which damage can be taken.

Call it what it is. Damage Reduction.

Edit: Actions speak louder then words. The deed is done, and so am I.

No, but when you're talking about how something works in a game you shouldn't just take the strictest possible definition of a word that the game uses to describe something and say that's how it works without actually looking at how the game really works.

Also, as I posted in that thread, threshold is still correct even with your defintion of 'the starting point for a new state or experience'. You're just assuming it means 'after this amount I get all damage I get the full effect of any weapon' when that isn't mentioned anywhere and isn't required by the word choice.
