I need some opinions here folks. Mcafee is some-sort of Anti-Virus program my mother likes to have on our computer because AOL said it is good.. Well.. it is not good at all. It does really nothing for us and just cause troubles. My mother just got this the other day (I always delete it due to it uselessness) and well... Here is my problem with it.

Average Amount of Time it takes for me to get online without Mcafee: 5-10 minutes.
Time it took for me to get online today with Mcafee: Almost 80 minutes. AND had to restart computer a few times.

Anyways, tell me your opinion on this and tell me (Or my mother, in this case) what Anti-Virus program she NEEDS to get to replace this one.

I'd personally recommend http://www.avast.com/en-gb/index since it is relatively lightweight, easily configurable, has strong detection rates, and it's free.

I think most people on this board would recommend Avast, seeing as I keep hearing about it all the time.

I have McAfee installed on one computer. It's about 4 years old, and slow. The time it takes to go online via a browser is about 30 seconds.

I'm not especially fond of McAfee, and prefer several other anti-virus programs, notably Kaspersky. That said, it does not sound as though your difficulties have anything to do with McAfee. Either that, or you have a computer with a CPU From Hell.

Alright. How big is the download so I can schedule it?

Oh and I will be yelling at my mother today.. At this rate.. Because now Mcafee is trying to install 'recommon' addons for FireFox without my say.. It already added a Toolbar I don't want.

MSE is goodm and free and stuff.

I checked my CPU thing. About 20% of the CPU used is from everything else. 80% of the CPU used is from Mcafee and Mcafee-related stuff. So.. Yes, our CPU is what prolly causing the troubles.

Am I the only one who uses Avira Antivir?

That's what I'd use. McAfee was awful when I used it.

There's one thing: McAfee, especially pre-2012, used a lot of memory (and even this year's version isn't exactly memory lite, either). It sounds like your computer is spooling to the hard drive in an attempt to make up for a deficit in RAM. How much memory have you got? McAfee requires 1 GB RAM for Vista and Windows 7.

I don't run any active Anti Virus on my machines. I never get viruses.

Now, I also never open email attachments from people unless I know why it was sent to me. I also never open any spam emails. I am behind a hardware firewall on my network.

I run a scan about once every two months or so. The 3 or 4 viruses I have gotten over the years are easily removed with available tools for those viruses.

That is the problem.. We have like a 2002 Dell Computer.. Eh.. I am getting my own computer for sure now!

As for Memory.. Our computer stores 70GB memory which is very low compare to normal computers.. I mean a new computer with 2GB RAM has 250GB memory storage.. So doing the math, this piece of crap computer prolly has less than 1 GB RAM and thus is why Mcafee causes so much problems.

Yes, that's it. I'm not recommending McAfee, you understand, but if you're going to run a computer with very little memory, you'll need a product that in turn uses very little memory when doing a virus scan. It's sad, but there it is.

I've got Kaspersky. It can be an overachiever and makes your life difficult sometimes (damn thing wants to do a cavity search on every USB it encounters ) but it's good protection, never once failed.

I hate McAfee. It was good a long time ago, but over the years has become a bloated mess. I like NOD32, but for most people Avast, Avira, or even MSE are probably fine.

I've got Kaspersky (at least for another week until my subscription runs out) and it has so far been very good for me and I would recommend it if you're willing to pay for it

I use McAfee and it takes about 2 seconds to get on the internet. And no other real problems. Guess I am the 1%.

Anyway, I've been using Avast! and the built-in Windows 7 firewall, although I use an outside program to control it. I also have Malwarebytes installed as a second scanner. Haven't had any issues so far, although the Windows firewall can be a bit difficult at times.

AVG is quite good?

My mother uninstalled Mcafee today and is planning to get avast now! I am in a happy mood now and I wish I could do some sort of Derpy Celebration Dance now!

I have McAfee and don't any problems. Maybe I'm the 1% with W0NDERW0MBAT.

My parents' old computer used to have McAfee. It would take five minutes for Internet Explorer to load. So I replaced McAfee with Avira (the anti-virus I used at the time) and IE with Chrome. Everyone's happy. They get a dozen viruses a day regardless of what anti-virus they use. I don't want to know where my dad browses.

At the moment I use MSE though, and I'd recommend it or Avast!

I've used Avira for the last 2 years, but it recently just randomly disappeared. I mean this literally.....I went into my programs looking for it to see if I needed to update it, and it simply wasn't there. I searched everywhere on my computer, but couldn't find a single trace of it. I have no idea where it ran off to, but now I'm using Avast.
