That's exactly what I'm going to do in future as well. FNV was literally the first game I preordered in years. Haven't even played it yet, not prepared to take the chance, I'm waiting for the patch to come out, and then I'm going to wait for all the other gamers to play-test the new patch, and only then will I actually risk playing it. But I'm with you, in future I'm going to wait a year and get the patched, working GOTY version instead.
Big "me too" from me, too. I'm not a huge hardcoe gamer, since marriage, employment, and two kids turn out to be a pretty full-time job for me, so I try to pick my games with care. I've pre-ordered three games this year, which is three more than I've ordered in the last two years. I got lucky with two of those pre-orders: Red Dead Redemption didn't give me any bugs or problems that I can remember, nor did Halo:Reach. I fully expected Reach to be solid, since I haven't experienced any serious bugs on any Bungie titles. RDR was a bit more of a leap of faith, but then I'm old-fashioned enough to believe that software should be pretty much finished and usable by the time it's released, so I didn't worry about it.
But man, I won't take that chance again. Now that I've been burned by FO:NV, and now that I'm reading so many posts about how it appears to be becoming the industry standard to just release a game without thorough testing and eventually release a patch addressing most of the major bugs once enough people have complained about them...
My gaming time is relatively short. I can't be bothered fiddling with a broken or unfinished game experience. No more pre-releases for me, except maybe from companies whose testing and QA record demonstrates a high degree of launch reliability, like Bungie's.
Having said all that, I'm still having fun with FO:NV. I'm trying to avoid progressing too far in the main story until the Big Patch comes out, but it's hard to resist doing a few side quests here and there to pass the time while I wait. I certainly understand the desire to hold off on even starting the game until it's patched, thus preserving the good aspects of the game experience and avoiding the frustration of seeing hours or days of hard work eradicated by something as dumb as the DLC bug. Hard work? Okay, I mean fun, but it's still a heavy investment of time and attention plus a certain amount of grinding that you don't really want to have to repeat unnecessarily. Part of me wants to put it down completely until the patch is out. But another part of me thinks, "As long as I have my Old Cowboy Hat and avoid the Come Fly With Me quest, maybe I can still run around the Mojave and have some fun." And honestly, that voice is hard to resist.
