Merchants cash will what!?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:12 am

I read that merchants total bottlecaps will be affected when you sell and buy, so that when you sell alot their caps go down and up when you buy. Is that true. If it is its a game breakingly bad idea.

First I have a question which would affect my attitude toward this. will this mean more merchants will carry more bottlecaps than in FO3. If no, why do this then.

If merchants total bottle caps go down when you sell then all through out the game all the merchants will have no cash, I really. really don't understand this at all.

Please tell me this is only for hard core mode, otherwise like I said. Game breaking.

It happened in Fallout 3 and Fallout 2 and Fallout 1. You sell [censored] to them, they take the item, you take the caps, and you have to wait a little while for their invo to respawn. It's the same as always if you ask me.

Um, dude... That was in Fallout 3, wasn't it? It'll regenerate, Its not like you can make them go broke by selling them stuff and never have their money come back. You aren't (logic-wise) the only one buying and selling in the world.

EDIT: Ninja'd

Did you play fallout 3? The merchants caps rose and fell based on what you bought and sold in Fallout 3 as well my friend.

EDIT: Also ninja'd :(

Well, I guess I'll be happy if it doesn't but like I said, I read that it was.

Just paraphrasing. "the amount of cash that merchants have will be affected by how much the player buys or spends at that merchant. (like if the caps were normally 500 and you sell a bunch the total will be 100, even affter the cash regenerates.)

Thats what I read. At this forum. Under confirmed content.

In F3? No, they didnt. Wait a few days and its back up. Its called a barter system, and it works out well.

I kind of doubt it will be permanant, but the whole economy seems to be completely overhauled and being balanced. I trust Obsidian for this one.

@Echonite. I am aware that in FO3 it regenerates. I am talking about for FO:NV. I strongly hope what I read was wrong. Which was that merchants caps will go down when you sell. Which is normal, but instead of the full amount coming back they will get only some of their caps back. Unless you start buying from them, then their caps will go up again.

Thats what I read, and heard repeated else were, and what I take issue with.

You can be pretty sure that the merchant caps will recharge. It makes no sense otherwise: You sell lots of stuff to them once until they run out of bottlecaps, then they won't ever have new bottlecaps so you have to find a new merchant to trade with? :P

That would be unrealistic, annoying and unnecessary.

It would actually make more sense for the merchants' caps to go up after you sell them a bunch of stuff. That's called inventory. :hubbahubba: They then can market that inventory where they can maximize the return on their investment and gain what's called a profit. :celebration: They should then have even more caps with which to purchase your next load of crap.

I would like to see a dynamic merchantile system whereby what you sell each merchant makes a difference on their profitability. Each merchant would have a "preferred stock" list and everything you sell them on this list would cause their caps levels to go up, while everything you sell them not on their list would cause their cap levels to go down.

Hopefully it won't turn out like in Fallout 3. There were times when I would spend 1000+ caps and then when I came back to sell some stuff, they would only have like 200 caps. They certainly didn't invest that money in a better inventory because they just had some more of the same old crap.

I am hoping there will be places like in Tactics were I can give them items worth thousands and I am given thousands of dollars. I hate having thousands worth to sell and only running into people with $200 and alot of junk I can find in any location. Balance would come from items costing more then FO3. Hopefully costs are alot like the Originals.

If you have $100 and you spend $20, how much do you have? Answer: $100. What? Yeah, it doesn't make any sense in a video game either.

Their inventory money should go down, it can go back up later as if someone else bought some stuff.

Perhaps they just worded it wrongly. I doubt Obsidian would have bothered changing the system, especially for something so idiotic as that.
Let's hope they worded it wrongly.

Merchants cash should go down as you sell things to them, their cash is not infinant.

However, the magical Vault Tec Banking Society comes by periodically and refreshes the merchants cash reserves. Typically this is on a 24 hour cycle. What it will be for this game remains to be seen. However I can't see Obsidian, or anyone else for that matter, gimping the economy by making it impossible to sell stuff in the latter half of the game.

Happened in every fallout game, hell, it happened in Morrowind as well! It prevents you from selling all of your items to a single person, and also prevents you from selling extremely costly items (sets of rare armor, a rare weapon, etc) to anyone but a hard to find wealthy merchant. Some items may be worth so much you can't even sell them without a huge loss in potential profit (sort of like in Morrowind. A 1,000,000 gold soul gem was essentially only worth 100,000, the highest gold count from a merchant in the game. There was a way around it though, but it was long and convoluted).

It would be nice if the player could boost a merchant's worth by selling them lots of valuable stuff that they can turn a huge profit on. Say, for example, I only sold fully repaired weapons/armor to Moira. She could then turn around and make a bloody killing selling those items for a profit. After a couple of weeks I would notice she would have a very much higher cap count. I could then sell even more valuable stuff to her. Conversely, if I sell her utter crap, it would be expected that she barely break even because everyone and their uncle is also selling utter crap, so I wouldn't notice an increase in her net worth.
