Merchants stop giving you money for items they buy

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 11:27 am

I spent a while leveling up alchemy, so I have a lot of potions left. Since even with all perks, the max most merchants seem to have it is around 3500ish, I looked around on how to increase their limit. Well, I found the "additem F XXXXX" console command to give them more money but there seems to be a bug where when the merchants crosses certain thresholds in his funds, he'll simply stop giving you money even though the game indicates he still has money left and that you've lost the item.

For instance, one of those thresholds seems to be 100,000 gold. So, imagine a merhcnat has 200 gold left and you use the console command to give him 100,000 ("additem F 100000") The merchant will now have 100,200 gold. Now, what happens is that you can sell anything as long as the merchant has MORE than 100,000. Once he reaches or goes under 100,000, he'll stop giving you money for the items you sell. This doesn't get fixed until the merchant has again more than 100,000. I found a few more thresholds and they seem to have no rhyme or reason.

So, is there a way to fix this or is there another way of quickly selling tons of items?

Edit:

My point is that there's already a thread that this can go in on the first page. Just to clarify why I just posted a link.

at the point where your cheating to give the merchant money, why not just cut out the middle man and give it to yourself? Why do you need that much anyways? I'm somewhere curious as to what you could possibly spend it on.

That is a good question.

Houses, expensive and powerful weapons and armor, training at higher levels... $100,000 gold will get you quite a bit in game.

Because it's not the same. If I didn't give the money to the merchant, I would simply sit there for hours selling my potions until the merchant ran out of money, wait in-game 48-hours, then repeat. It's a waste of time and not fun. So, instead of going through the tedium of that process, I simply give the money to the merchant and sell my wares. Not quite the same as giving myself the money since I don't know how much I'd get with perks, bonuses, etc. Otherwise, I would have indeed skipped all this, given myself the money, and deleted the items or sold them for no money.

I don't need it for anything in particular but this is irrelevant to my thread. I don't even know how much my potions are worth but I don't want to delete them.

Stop being lazy and just do what was intended. Quick traveling around the cities and running through the merchants isn't THAT time consuming and tedious.

Otherwise you might as well skip ALL the "tedium" and not even bother with picking up or selling anything at all. Just console yourself money when you need.

And why stop there? Let's skip all that tedious leveing up and use the console. Let's skip all the monotonous weapon swinging and magic casting and use the console. Let's skip all that repetitive running around and completing quests. Let's just not play the game.

Hey, kid! It's boring and tedious to me. Maybe once you grow up to the age where you realize that you're not the center of the universe, you'll understand that not everyone has fun the way you do. Besides, this thread isn't about how you think I should play the game. It's about strange behavior from NPCs.

If you have nothing of value to contribute to this thread, you're welcome to ignore it and go fast-travel all over Skyrim.

Merchants don't naturally have that much money in the game, so using the console and finding out giving them way more money then they'd normally have breaks them isn't a bug. If you can some how duplicate this through "real" gameplay then post about it then. Your causing this so called bug, so I don't think anyone at Beth, or here, will take you too seriously.

So, in other words, you don't have an answer to the OP. Thank you for your contribution.

The console is there for debugging and fixing broken parts of quests etc. If you're using it to add money to the game, and something is going wrong, then that's the way it is going to stay.

A patch would never address anything to do with the console, it's not intended or supported for every day use.

Coolness. It's a good thing I never asked for a patch but simply:

It seems everyone's too high and mighty to actually address the question instead of lecturing about how to play and how console can break the game and blah blah blah.

If you are going to go this route, grab a calculator, add up all the gold you would get selling the potions to the merchant, use the console to give the gold to yourself, and then dispose of the potions however you see fit.

Fine then dude. I'll explain in such a way as to be crystal clear. This is not a bug or problem, it is intended. There is no fix, there is no workaround. All you've done is find a loophole in a debugging console.

I did think about this, but there were too many.

Actually, I ended up finding a mod that gives a lot of money to merchants. That worked great!

So, thanks to the couple of people who actually tried to help. ;)

Glad you were able to get it sorted mate. There's a mod (or at least will be eventually) for almost anything :)
