Missing / Delayed Sound SOLUTION

cntrl-alt-delete to raise the task manager, right click FalloutNV.exe, choose Set Priority, and High
You'll need to do this every time you run the game.

This almost unbelievably seems to work for me. Hopefully an official fix will be forthcoming though. Cheers!

Is steam taking priority over New Vegas?
If not what is?

It's a head scratcher, but it works.

Now I'm onto the huge frame rate drop around NPCs after awhile in the game. At least it's a different problem.

Does not work for me unfortunately, but I will continue my hunt to fix this problem, even if its means reinstalling the game.

Save you some time, Reinstalling doesn't work. From Steam (Saved you TON of time) or from disc (10 minutes). Tried both. Sorry :( The problem is the game itself so far in the majority of the cases.

Well thanks for saving me time, I guess I will just have to wait for a patch to come out.

Like one of the previous posters said, this worked for me to fix the strangely delayed sounds but it introduced a new problem. Now I stutter horribly when I am around NPC's (didn't do this before the sound was fixed) so I'm at a loss for words. *shrug*

There is a solution for that. Pop their heads off. Literally. It works for some, disabling emotions works a little bit also.

These two I am looking forward to trying. A headless New Vegas awaits me when I get off work in a hour and half, lmao! :D

@ KyleM - Trust me, uninstalling was a big pain for me. My steam bugged out and it took me 3 hours to get it and New Vegas back. Be very afraid of the uninstall :P

It might be worth trying this to avoid the NPC FPS bomb. Rather than setting the priority to "High" set it to "Above Normal". I was able to do the entire Goodsprings quest against the power gangers, and a good bit beyond, without that bug hitting. The sound for me worked as it should as well.

Doesnt quite work for me.. if its normal the sound and some actions as drinking are hugely delayed if I dont press escape. If I do set the process to High the tables turn..sounds are nice, actions are taken but movement and whatnot are getting delayed..pressing W he moves but he keeps moving if I take my hand off W for 5 sec or so.. I'm in a no win situation...is there a patch coming..? and when.. Its unplaylable.. I DID not just waste money on a buggy game. F3 wasnt that buggy when it came out. WTH has obsidian done to the engine ffs..

PS: Running on XP

Wheres the "official" tech support for NV? I hardly doubt this will get fixed in the upcoming patches. ANother month for a patch that might not fix this..no way. I need a refund.

This fixed the sound problems (speaking and sound not being heard until esc is pressed) But now my game locks up (Acts like it freezes) for roughly 30sec to a minute, every 3-5 minutes, I dont know if this is the stutter but its really annoying, and for some reason the graphics look a little off when its set to high. Other than that it works great

If I have sound problems at any game I just install the Silent Hill fix (google for Silenthill5patch11), it will overwrite the default Directx9 for any game if you unpack the contents into the main folder. Of cource this could result in some graphic glitches, so never complain about something like that until you tested it without the fix.

This worked for my aging XP machine as well. Down side is NPCs are a tad choppier, but I can deal with that over no speech.

I set the priority to above normal and it worked just as well. Setting priority to high can cause problems. For people still getting the stutters. The K-lite codec packed cured that for me. I hope it works for others too.

Same. I do get some fake freezing where the game acts like it's locked up every few minutes but not nearly as often as I did with it set on high. It is still rather annoying. This is by far the buggiest game I have ever bought. I've played in betas that weren't this buggy.

I noticed and this is still in theory that some of the freezing may be due to loading new areas.

I owe you a beer. It actually worked. I used this for ME2 before the patch came but I couldnt imagine it working for a non-unreal engine game. Thanks.
