I don't want to claim that this game is a waste of time until I'm finished with it, but it sure does a lot of things that appear to be designed to generate hate. At least from me. One thing that keeps coming up is an unwillingness to display for the player an recognizable exit from a mission environment. This has happened 3 or 4 times so far (I'm about 9 hrs. into the game). Currently, my mission is to break into the abandoned distillery (check), make my way to the still while battling mutants (check), and concoct some special blueberry booze also while shooting mutants (check), then return to Dietrich with my sample.
How the hell do I get out of here? I have reloaded this mission well over 5 times looking for the exit. I re-set it this morning and spent 90 minutes exploring the distillery environment but I end up in an enormous circle. I seem to have discovered all the odds 'n' ends to collect. More times then not (in other missions) when the task is accomplished, an exit strategy is typically implied by more charging enemies. There is a room with a large, broken ladder leading up to another floor, but that just moves the player back into the same path that takes you to where you already were.
So here is where I'd like to unload just a bit of my frustration: I like the idea that many current designers and developers seem to nurture that you can merge the thrill of a shooter with the gratifying sense of discovery that goes along with an RPG. In other words, maybe the game wants me to keep searching and searching for the exit, allowing me to find all the fun stuff like cans and books. But at the same time, it's also their responsibility to make sure gratification and fun doesn't turn into frustration and boredom by offering an evident way out.
On the plus side, as someone who struggled everyday with Fallout New Vegas, re-booting the game (a barely exaggerated) every 20 minutes, I like playing a game so sleek, polished and fluid. But the visual presentation appears to be the whole show, as apparently not much thought went into the content...
