Windows Mobile svcks, though. (not an opinion, a fact that even Microsoft acknowledges, it's why they shipped WP7 before it was feature-complete, adding major features through updates instead)

Uhhh, AFAIK, the HTC Surround runs WP7, if yours has Windows Mobile on it then you got a bootleg.

There's Windows Mobile, which is Microsoft's old offering

Then there's windows Phone, which is Microsoft's current offering

If you don't like WP7, you shouldn't have gotten the surround. The Surround isn't anything spectacular on the hardware side of things, making the only real reason to get it the OS, and since you don't like WP7 apparently, you're stuck with a lemon. Is there an early trade-in clause in your contract? If so, trade it in for something that you like.

This is why you should always do your research before buying something with a contract, and why you should always try it out in-store as well as alternatives before deciding on something.

Well, have fun with it for the next 20 months or so. Hopefully you'll get Mango which might make it svck a little less bad.

20 months from now: be smart, get an android phone ;) (that way even if you don't like it stock you can at least install custom roms to give it a boost in performance)

AT&T right now would be the HTC Inspire and the Nexus S (Nexus S is only available with a contract at Best Buy)

In the near future the Samsung Galaxy S II will probably prove to be worthy

On Verizon there's a lot to choose from and not really up to date on which ones are the best (I gave up on Verizon when they announced their stupid data caps). I've heard good things about pretty much all the DROIDs (of course with the Motorola DROIDs you have to put a custom rom on them to kill MotoBlur)
