Do mod trailers have that same effect of anticipation?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:18 pm

If I were to make a trailer for a mod I am working on, and it was well done, would any of you get that same feeling you do with normal games where you cannot wait for it to be released? I am curious if you guys get excited over a game due to the trailer because of the gameplay/story shown in it, because of the company/group making it, or both? I'm just trying to figure out the overall effects of trailers and how that works. So please vote and comment on any thoughts about trailers and what you like/dislike in and about them. Sorry if this is in the wrong section, it relates to trailers for NV mods, so I figured it went here. :)

I'd imagine something along the lines of "finally we get the real TES IV!"? :hehe:

To not derail the topic, Trailers that show off the new features of the mod are what make them good to me, such as the aforementioned Project Nevada trailer, and the FCOM one too (got me to install it, but haven't yet found the time to play it ).

It depends. With Project Nevada, it wasn't so much the trailer or the features in it (most of which were in FWE), it was just the fact that the mod was being made.

Most mods don't have that. Quest mods would benefit the most from trailers, but few actually get them.

Trailers would be best if they emphasized how their addition to the game changes things. Instead of just flashes of the features themselves, show them fluidly in action. There was a video of FWE and a multitude of other mods that did this PERFECTLY with a big battle in the DC Ruins.

I really wanted to make a trailer for my crowning achievement in hardened, but I figured it would give it away...So I didn't. In a week I'll go ahead and make it anyway. As for topic, they're nice when they're put to stupid amazing music and feature lots of explosion a la FWE.

They don't really do anything for me, I'd rather just have a good description and a couple screenshots, and perhaps a gameplay video if it is big enough to call for one.

I plan on making entirely Quest mods, so this is what this partains to. It looks like overall for the most part people like trailers, so long as they are carefully made and show off the features and aren't 'pointless'.

You have never seen a trailer and gone, "I HAVE to get that, right now!!!" before? Is a trailer a bad thing to you, or simply not a good thing?

EDIT: Edited poll to remove somewhat redundant answer to the first question.

That's what I was thinking when I voted. That was an awesome trailer! I think MMM also had one, not really sure. It's all a little blurry its been so long
But's OOO's I watched several times as the music was good and everything it showed. Almost like the trailer for a movie. I still have a copy of it.
I think Enclave Commander had one as well (for FO3).

I voted -
Possibly. If it was well made.
The story shown in the trailer.
How well the trailer is made.

I'm not really fussed about trailers, though. If it looks good, sounds good, looks like fun and I could disappear into it for a few hours, chances are I'd want the mod.
It just depends.

Look at all these young'ins around us, nary a one of 'em with a join date before '08. :)

The music is from "Requiem For A Dream", which was also used in the LOTR:TTT trailer as well. Google around and you can probably find it.

And yeah, the OOO teaser what came to mind for me when I saw this thread too.

Too be honest, I'm more excited for Project Nevada then I was for New Vegas. I just found the game play trailer that much more interesting! :D

My god. By now that song is one of the most overused ones ever. So that makes Obscuro one of the first to use! Then everyone went and copied him. >.>

So you guys just want a well made, interesting trailer. Its really cool to see that community made stuff has the potential to generate the same kind of excitement for release. :)

Not after a trailer, no. It may encourage me to find out more, but again, I'd rather just have gameplay, screenshots, and/or a good description. And it is not a bad thing, I just don't care if there is a trailer or not.

Actually i never rely on a game trailer, i have never seen a game trailer that is true to the content in the game so far...and i have played games for over 25 years now. Game trailers is 90% movie and not in game scenes, so i rather rely on game demos and things like that.

There is exceptions, but very rare to find.

Trailers definitely help kick the excitement for projects up a notch. The most important part, even more than the actual content, is that the trailer is well done and captivates the audience.
Take my FWE trailer for example, which actually only showed a very tiny amount of FWE's features, but still is quite popular and I think helped boost interest in FWE.

Whatever you do, just don't use Requiem for a Dream or Mind Heist in a trailer. Using any of those two songs automatically makes your trailer cheap and lame (I'll exempt OOO here but only out of sentimentality).

Oh no, trust me, I have a source of music that is rarely used/heard of, and INCREDIBLE for trailers. I hope you guys will like any trailers I come up with. (And the mods they are for, of course. :P)

Really? Even if they are made very proffesionally, show an incredible story, a very well made mod, and envoke the feeling of the mod really well?

I would have thought you would be one to really enjoy a well made mod trailer.

A mod trailer is not the same as an actual game release trailer to me. I love all the FO3 trailers and their DLC trailers as well as New Vegas but they are made by the companies and released far enough ahead of time to really get me anticipating the game/dlc release. Mod trailers are different in the fact they are mods. You can make a slick professional looking trailer but if the mod itself does not deliever or really bork the game, then the time spent to make the trailer is wasted, better to have put the time and energy in the mod itself and beta testing it.

I shy away from huge overhaul mods anyway. I lose enough with small mods that just mess up the game. I remember one that seemed like a simple realignment for hand gun shooting and instead it made NPC's sink through the ground! I played with it like that thinking it was a bug but it got worse and I had to isoloate what mod it was to remove it, it took an uninstall/reinstall and days of testing to find out it was such a small mod but it had such a horrible bug. So for me, I just want a good, safe mod. Screenshots are nice and I love gameplay movies. I have made several for modders when I test their stuff and they seem happy to have the showcase movie as well. Links at YouTube back to the modders never hurt and vice versa for me, linking my movie to their mods.

Fun to watch, sure, but they don't install any sort of hype or excitement for what they are showing. Though they are probably closer to actual game play then any official trailer... I guess there just is no room for my mind to go wild with what to expect.

@Gunmaster: Oscuro (like the end boss in Rise of the Triad? Although few know that game, so that may not be a good example). But back then that music wasn't overused. Unless I just didn't watch enough YouTube videos. It was new and even I was one of those to say, "OMG what is that music? I want it!" :)

:)

Hmmm, that's not familiar. Unless someone made a tribute one later or something. But watching that makes me want to reinstall Oblivion as it looks like as much fun as it was back then :)
Although I wouldn't update as I don't like the direction it went after you left, and the file size and constant updates are too much for me to download.

I do remember the FCOM one, but as good as it looked I couldn't have it. It was just too big and too much of a strain on my PC. But the OOO + MMM + TT combination was just fine.
I made my own Reaver companion (taking advantage of a glitch before it was patched) and those bengal-like tigers. I foget the name, now. Horrid to fight against, awesome as a follower :)

@MadCat: The OOO one was even included in the download, which is the copy I kept.
I never noticed join dates, unless it was yesterday. I recognise people by their names mostly :)

Reasons why I despise Game/Mod Trailers

1. Most if not all videos use that crappy "Lux Aeterna" from Requiem for a Dream, (see #4 for the exception) which has to be the most annoying "song" ever written because it's the most repetitive,
annoying and overused 'song', to the point now, that I immediately shut off ANY video that uses it.

2. As Ceano said, 90% of the trailer is in game cut scenes and pre-rendered cgi and not of the gameplay itself.

3. WORK ON, AND FINISH THE MOD, INSTEAD OF WASTING TIME MAKING A TRAILER!

4. Any trailer that uses music, period. I want to hear the in-game sounds, I don't want to hear dimmu Borgir, or any other speed metal group with Cookie Monster vocals annoying me,
while I'm trying to watch the video. I'd rather hear a voice over of the mod author explaining what the mod is intended to do, how much of it is done etc....

Well I don't think a theatrical trailer I would make would have any of these 4 issues. Let me reply.

1. I would not use Requiem for a Dream music. That has been overused for like 5 years now, and there is MUCH better theatrical music out there.

2. If the trailer is for a mod, it would be 100% ingame footage. None of it would be prerendered. Well, except the 'debut' trailer. But thats because my friend is really into modelling, so it would be a 100% pre-render trailer. But once the mod is almost done, I would make a theatrical one with only ingame footage.

3. Making a trailer does not take away from my time making the mod. Let me put it this way. (with random number for the sake of example) Lets say I spend 10hrs a day working on the mod. Then 4 hours doing random stuff (playing games, hanging with friends, going places, etc) and the other 10 hrs sleeping. If I were to make a trailer, it would simply change to; 10hrs on mod, 2 hrs on random stuff, 2 hrs on trailer, 10 hrs sleeping. You see? The trailer would be deducted from my other time, not the mod making time. Thus having no impact on my work flow.

4. You assume I am stupid and would do something stupid like put metal to a trailer. That is NOT what you do! I would use some of the fantastic music from a orchestral group, like Two Steps From Hell for example. I would never use actual band music for a trailer. Unless its to convey a point like where they use Johnny Cash music for the Splinter Cell Conviction trailer to convey his pain and anger.

See? The things you hate only apply to actual full game trailers, or trailer made by stupid people. :P I say you give them a try.
