Modding Restrictions

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:17 am

This is my first idea I had for brink and I thought I should share it to the public.

So here's what I mean, I think there should be a few restrictions on what players should be able to mod. No I'm not saying no community maps I'm all for people making maps to share with everyone. I'm talking about mods for servers like from my experiences the dreaded 32 man servers and insta respawns, because of the matchmaking system I don't want to have to spend long periods of time trying to find a server that doesn't have game breaking mods on it.

Think of it this way with the respawn system the way it is with a insta respawn mod being a medic would be next to worthless. Also from all the game play videos I've seen the amount of players looks just right for the sizes of the maps and servers with larger player limits would ruin the game for some players who aren't able to help their team because the jobs would probably already be completed or not have one for the person. And from every FPS I've played that has the 32 man mods the matches just are not as much fun with all the extra people. The matches are just too chaotic and you can clearly tell that the maps you're playing on are just too small for such large amounts of people.

Also since Brink won't have crits (from what I've heard so far and am really happy for) someone will eventually make a mod for them and if I was looking for a server I wouldn't enjoy a server with crits where I can die from just one random bullet where I'd normally live through. Since crits tend to make the game turn into a game of luck where you can be getting slaughtered by a guy just to get one lucky crit and win the fight.

Another option would be to have a option you can set if you'd like the game to search for servers without of these types of mods which would be ideal. So if your in the mood for a normal vanilla game you can find that without having to wade through all the gamebreaking modded servers just to find one that works for you.

Let me just say again I fully support custom maps and game mods I just do not like having all the larger player count and modified respawn servers.

not sure what you mean, PCs have server browser, lets you know what you're playing, 16 players is probably hard coded and respawn time is scripted per map

Even with a server browsers you still would have to wade through modded servers you wouldn't want to play on.

Obviously people shouldn't be allowed to mod anything to do with experience system. Also weapon, character models, clothes etc., so that rpg system keeps its role. Everything else IMO should be allowed.

It's not like you'd have to "wade through" them, changed player counts are easily filtered or sorted provided the server browser looks something like the steam one. As for the random mods like instaspawn, well a tagging system could help with some of that and being able to filter out custom maps could also reduce the amount of clutter. Though really once the number of modded servers outnumbers the normal ones then we've got a problem.

I don't think there should be any restrictions to things like player counts or spawn times, the latter of which imo should be something tailored to each map rather than something universal and the former could be useful for larger maps. I know the devs wanted to focus on smaller maps and confrontations however really I think that's just so their maps will work with both console and PC versions. Honestly I'd like to see some 12v12 maps either made by the community or by SD at a later stage. I'm less in favour of mods to character models or weapons, however I don't think too many restrictions to which should be included with the games release. If servers that change the models to some unfair or annoying ends become a problem then something can be done about it later.

Really imo the best plan is to keep things fairly open at the start and see how the modding community treats the game.

Is it even confirmed that they are releasing modding tools?

I'd prefer if there would not be any mod tools, I'd rather want SD to provide great support to the game and truly listen to the gamers.

A map maker, and maybe a clothes editor/shop depending on how big the PC crowd is.

I don't think there should be any real mods. I find quite often in games like MW2 (like all OHKs) mods totally ruin it. In games like TF2, where there are only three possible OHK (Headshot, Backstab and Crit Hits) so it takes much more shots, mods ruin it in different ways (blocking classes, all crits, team killing, aimbots). I don't like Mods very much FULL STOP

voted no, people should be able to mod everything... Using the Unreal Tournament games as an example. The ability to mod everything has resulted in some awesome total conversions that have taken a step further and become stand alone games: Killing Floor, Alien Swarm, etc... The ability to mod everything will add an extended life to any game and give gamers a choice on how they want to play.

Also, depending on the amount of continued support the devs give for the game after release. Full mod ability would allow the community to make "patches" for the game long after the devs have moved on to their next game.

For the complaint about having to wade through modded servers in the server browser, just have a button for search for standard servers only...

Not if they make the server browser correctly, most modable games have a server browser which tells you if the game has been modified or not, and a filter to let you exclude them if you want. In my opinion whatever people want to mod is fine, just don't join what you don't want to play.

A "server info" button could be a solution.

I think modding should be enabled to a decent point. I think community made stuff really contributes to the general experience of a game.
Tired of the standard maps? Play community-made maps.
Want longer firefights? Join a game with other damage multipliers.
Tired of heavies? Play a game with light only.

I guess the biggest problem wiil be to implement this on the console versions of the game.

Mods usually aren't enabled for consoles, and since Splash Damage hasn't made a huge fuss about how they are allowing custom content on consoles I can only assume mods (if they release an SDK) would be PC only.

I would prefer to have only Maps to mod. Then maybe some game modes for multiplayer. Cause there is already many custom options to skin your characters and weapons.
If there is to be mods for weapons and characters, i think there should be a thread for people to post their designs (like a competition) then each month, the best skin should be imported into the game from the developers.

I don't see why anything should be restricted, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it should be excluded.
Let people make what they want.
