Mods to make NV more realistic, but not fun crushing?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:13 pm

The title says it all. I have had enough of these mods that allow me to steam role through the Mohave and allow me to walk around in a stone wall. I want to be able to play NV in a shack with a rifle that I can barely keep together, but am still able to win every engagement.

If you have any mods that you personaly have used that do this 4 u. Plz post them so my quest for awsomnes can begin.

So you want to mod the game to be hard and difficult.... yet always win?

That doesn't sound very hard.

Anyways try this

I probably didn't write the question the best way. Sure, I don’t want to win all the time, but I want to be able to win vs 1-3 but anymore I want to be dead on Hard.
What I really want however is a thick post apocalyptic atmosphere.

If you're going to use Arwen's mod (Which I use too) make sure to switch to normal difficulty, that's what it is balanced for.

If you want fun, Arwen's probably isn't the way to go.

On the other hand, I don't have any better suggestions.

I haven't tried out any mods yet, but if you want fun, maybe check out this, http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40040. It's also probably compatible with Arwen's mod, and also modular.

What I really want however is a thick post apocalyptic atmosphere.

You might want to check out http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35998. It's for the weather/environment.

I have. It's a pretty good example of why games nowadays don't come with features like the ones inside it in the first place.

Because games have to appeal to a wider audience, so they can't make it very difficult. Arwen's mod is definitely not for everyone, it completely changes the way the game is played, but I find it challenging in a good way (though I do disable some of the harsher features in the options menu).

As povuholo posted, my Tweaks are NOT for everyone, which is why I posted this warning on my mod's webpage:

"Warning! My Realism Tweaks are not for the casual gamer. This is an Extreme Realism mod, so it will make your game much more difficult. My Tweaks will also make your game world much more realistic, immersive, and challenging. This changes the game way more just turning on the New Vegas 'hardcoe' mode! This is my vision of what hardcoe game play is really like."

And my Tweaks are modular, plus it comes with and options menu, so the user can select how much difficulty they want.

Besides, "fun" in games is a very subjective thing. Personally I found the default game to be way too easy, which made the game play a lot less fun for me . . . which is why I made my Tweaks for myself. My Tweaks make the game more "fun" . . . but only if you are the type of gamer that finds more challenging game play to be more enjoyable.

Thanks mate, I have read your mod and am very impressed with the list of modifications you made to the game.

I'm having a lot of fun with:

Arwen_NV_Realism_Core.esp
Arwen_NV_Hard-Core.esp

The hard core was a serious challenge. My courier was level 12 before having better than leather armor.

I'm using them with several other mods.
No problems with a merged patch as long as they are at the bottom.

its hard to give u just one mods, for me completing of all mods i needed was about month , now i can finaly play and that gives me a lot of satisfaction :) . i recomand xfos tweak especialy with merchants lower price - which make prices sumary 4-8 times higher, hard less ammo and meds which makes u to create own ammo if u like to shoot ( no more runing with 1000s ammo, now about 50 is realy high). also higher level rate mod, speicial overhaul. but to tell the true you will be happy only if u can makes your own siple mod that change few settings. i also recomand haredened mod which changes monster a lot ( now gecko is not that easy to kill) .

BTW,
You can always just use Arwen_NV_Realism_Core.esp and not the Hard Core esp if you find using them together is "Fun crushing".

I think the perks every level helps a lot, but I wouldn't suggest using them together on your first time through.

I'll also recommend Classic Companion Configurator if you find having your companions auto heal to 100% after every fight makes it way too easy.

There is also an option to down grade their weapons if you find them too butch (I'm talking about you Boone)

One thing I would recommend with whatever difficulty increasing mods you go with. PLAY WITH THEM FOR A COUPLE OF LEVELS BEFORE YOU MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Sometimes it might feel like they are over the top but it might just be a matter of getting used to it and changing your strategies. When I played FO3 I gave up on FWE twice and then tried it again and stuck with it for a bit and I never played the game without it again. Suddenly trying to take out an abandoned house full of raiders at an earlier level was truly frightening. I could still win but I had to be careful and think it through. Taking advantage of terrain, sneaking close to lay down some mines first and then luring them into them, taking them out as they came around corners, taking cover to reload and recover AP, actually using those drugs like Jet and Morphine, etc... I'd still kill the 8 raiders or whatever but I was beat up and bruised at the end and the fight was actually challenging and got your adrenaline up.

Anyway another option that you might want to take a look is XFO. It's basically a huge collection of esps. Each one modifies one part of the game. Like one might increase damage globally. Another might change the amount of "bleedthrough" that always gets through armor. Another esp can modify how sneak works and another esp might modify barter difficulty to be much harsher. Another esp to modify how many skill points you get or perks per level. Another one improves the combat AI. Another can modify item rarity (like meds, ammo, etc...). There is another to modify armors to use a mix of DR and DT (light armor mostly DR heavy armor DT and medium a mix). On top of that each of those esps usually has like 3 or 4 variations. Like for ammo rarity there might be esps ranging from actually increasing the amount of ammo you find all the way to making almost all ammo containers empty.

XFO
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37871

Pros:
=====
- You can pick and choose the esps you use. Sort of like getting to build your own overhaul mod without all the work!

- Offers variations of many of the esps. So If you think the 2x damage esp is too much you can pick the 1.5 damage esp.

- Since the tweaks are broken down into small changes in individual esps if you use something like FNVEdit you can easily see what was changed and do even more tweaking to your liking if you want!

- It's easier to use with other mods. Since the esps are usually small and to the point you can easily just not use one of the esps if it conflicts with another mod. Like if you find another mod that changes all the armors in the game you can just uncheck the armor revamp esp but keep all the skill, damage, item rarity, etc... esps. Something like Arwen's is more meant to be used alone as it changes so much of the game there are bound to be conflicts with many other mods.

Cons:
=====
- The author's website lists all the esps and what each does but it can be a bit daunting at first to go through them all to build your own esp list (though he has suggestions).

- The esps ARE mostly small and straightforward. You won't see some those fancier weapons effects or other game changing features that Arwen adds.

I have to agree with XFO being your best bet. It takes a while to set up correctly, but once it's done, it's a very good tailored experience. I'm running XFO, Project Nevada, Powered Power Armor and a bunch of other knickknacks that are making my FONV experience very enjoyable.

I have:
XFO
Project Nevada
Nevada Skies - URWLified
Electrocity
Powered Power Armor
Weapon Mods Expanded
Dynavision
Imaginator
Crafting Backpack
Fillable water/caps
Added strip markers

And some others that I can't remember. Very stable and enjoyable experience, with no noticeable unbalances etc. I tried Very Voracious Vermin with this setup and I couldn't stand the increased difficulty, it was too much at low level. Although IIRC the weapons added by the nVamp-VVV.esm were pretty awesome, but I could be mistaken about where they came from.

- A couple of the modules are slightly buggy, (and possibly broken with the new patch, haven't tried it yet, been busy with college) and the Mod Author has currently gone completely AWOL from the FONV and DA2 modding scene so far. :cryvaultboy:

there is one simple method to make game fun and more realistic, turn the autoaim off by some mod and turn off crossfire at options :) loooot better experience ( of course turn on damage in vats and real time) :)

also if u like i can send u my version of monster mod and headshot mod that changes chance to hit vith vats for all body parts of most npc and crature ( like : head: 3% hand 20% legs 30% torso 60% and damage to 1.5 :) so if u wana shot sth at head u should be close to it or have a lots gun/en skills .

I think the patch hosed various elements of XFO-for instance the enemy AI, which I always thought to be the best part of XFO, does not seem to be working now. Enemies no longer seek cover, heal and stuff. All this since the patch.

EDIT: The Enemy AI plugin works fine. Was my save that was messed up.

Thanks mate, but I will pass. The problem with the 1st 2 fallouts for me was mainly how vats were for the most part, frustratingly inaccurate!!! And come on, how can you not like those EPIC vats moments.
