more combat added to base game in future DLC ?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:34 am

i like new vegas, its a good game, BUT, it was definately lacking in dungeons for sure or large building complexes to battle in, like the capitol building inside and out, or the chryslus building or lob enterpirses or national archives etc. roosovelt academy, all from FO3 of course, there does seem to be a lack of combat in new vegas, supermutants were fun to fight in fallout 3, you could take a long time battling them, new vegas only has 3 locations with supermutants outdoors and they're not all that tough to fight, so most of em don't have good long range weapons but anyway i do think a future dlc needs to address this a bit, some more random human type or super mutant encounters, not a lot of human type enemies to fight in the game,

It'd be nice with a couple of dungeons to be added with a DLC and for some random encounter zones to be added as well.
But Super Mutants should stay in their small number.
They aren't the top dogs like their east coast "brethren".
I don't mind there being less fighting in this game really, but what I do mind is that by lvl 20+ everything is just too easy.
Almost nothing poses a challenge anymore so my will to explore fades with that realization.
So while I like the fixed enemy spawns as they are more realistic it does take away the challenge of the game.
So erm... Maybe have half the fixed enemy spawns alter to more challenging enemies at lvl 20+?

I kinda disagree with Super Mutant bit. Not the "inferior in numbers to the East Coast versions", or the small numbers. They should add in some raiding parties that spawn randomly in a couple areas. Heck, there is a challenge perk for killing Super Mutants alone (50 per rank), but yet there are little to no Mutants to kill in the first place.

In general, I kind of miss the random enemy spawns from FO3. I thought it was cool that at one time there was something like a mole rat in one area, than a Deathclaw later on when I was at a higher level. Heck, with BS I was encountering packs of Deathclaws (2-3 at a time), and I was loving it.

I agree that when one has gotten up in the higher levels, it becomes rather too easy. Even an up in difficulty really does not help enough to stem the tide. I know Fallout is supposed to have "set" enemies, but why not a couple of enemies that level up with the player to keep up the challenge when they're encountered? Kinda like Oblivion with certain enemies.

I personally think the roads need more raiding parties of enemies corresponding to the areas. More Legion ambushes and more NCR patrols. The roads are way too safe IMO. I know that the Mojave is more "civilized", but does that mean it has to be less dangerous too?

Plus why do Deathclaws seem to be one of the few creatures that does not hunt? They always seem to stay in the same area.

Anyhow, I hope that Obsidian makes an update (or small-cost/time DLC) that adds more "bite" to the Mojave. Some of those empty areas need some love, too. DLC would probably be a more better choice, so this way players have it as an option rather than have it forced upon those who do not wish it.

For the sake of my damn sanity I wish people would stop saying this.

Use a less powerful weapon. Self gimp. I don't care how much you don't like it. I'll buy you a box of tissues. Anything's more preferable than the bullet sponges of PL and MZ again.

Well, they first went to war with humans and their entire Cathedral and spawning ground were blown to Narnia.
After things had calmed down they were still met with bigotry but were slightly accepted from place to place.
And then the second generation mutants broke out but they were not in as vast number as the first generation.
And seeing as how it's been like 120 years since Master's defeat a lot of super mutants have met their ends due to being hunted by NCR, dying by wild-life or by the hand of other super mutants and nightkin and not being able to reproduce with each other or with other humanoids or by using FEV as it's most likely in the hands of NCR or Shi by now.
It makes sense for them to be in lesser number in Vegas, but yeah I would like to see a Black Mountain scouting party every once in a while.

He is'nt complaining about it not being like MZ or PL, god.

He's saying everything can die easily with any weapon late in the game, at level 29 I had 30 points in guns and could one hit a bunch of things on Hard. :|

Self gimping is just as redundant as people complaining that the game is too easy after a while. Some people can make a challenge for themselves with what they have, which can be effective, while others would prefer if greater challenges were added for them so even when they've reached the top they will still have something to challenge them.

Why should I have to gimp myself cause they can't create a balanced game by lvl 20+?
Your solution is not valid to me.
I refuse to go "Oh I shouldn't pick that perk cause it will make me too powerful" or "I really shouldn't use this weapon..".
Why?
Cause I want to play the game the way I want to play it.
I don't want to be forced to cut back on my own game style just cause the game can't keep up.
I thought this was the point of having difficulty modes?
So that once I feel I'm too "pro" I'll leave Normal and bump it up to Hard instead.
As it is right now Very Hard was challenging at first but is now no more than a small bump in the road at the start.

the game needs a few minor combat adjustments, some ceasers legion or viper patrols, more ncr patrols, not a major overhaul but a few random spaws of supermutant here and there maybe, some more human type enemies, i like how the game isn't all combat, but there does need to be a few more combat zones in the game, maybe not tons, but a few more random encounters, a few more enemy patrols, specially along major roads, and especially as we level up, it svcks being at level 25 or 30 and not having a lot of enemies to kill except for the few areas where there are deathclaws or cazadores, i want some enemies shooting bullets and energy weapons at me more. the fiends are pretty tough, how about a few more of them crusing around a few areas.

Yeah I would love some more humanoid enemies actually using weapons against me, but the problem there is:
* Quality loot.
* Jury Rigging.
* Unavoidable damage (A la Point Lookout and Overlords).

Could easily mess up the economy or mess up enemies with unavoidable damage.

i understand but to not have combat because they're worried we'll get the weapons, that makes sense "lets make the game boring because we don't want the player to get weapons from fallen enemies". they need to think about why new vegas is only rated at 7.5, its mainly the lack of combat, the game delivers in lots of areas, the skill/perk/special system is excellent, the quests are good etc, lots of factions, they did good in lots of areas, but it is lacking in combat, not a lot of dungeaons to fight in, i had great battles in FO3 in the chryslus building, the capitol building, etc it took a while to clear out some of those locations, the supermutants were pretty tough, laying traps etc was pretty fun. FO3 got like 9 rating it had tons of combat, lots of good combat zones, and thats lacking in new vegas, thats why the game ins't as popular as fallout 3 was and isn't rated as high, so they need to get a clue about this.

it's funny how some people said that the cobat-oriented dlc's of FO3 were the worst ones, but in NV we want more combat dlc's

I would like an area like the outdoors area of Dead Money filled with enemies that use various types of weapons and equipment that all respawn after one day of in game time. have it be a warzone like the capitol building in FO3

yeah i agree, that would be cool, the game does lack combat and they should of put a little more attention to that area, otherwise the game is awesome i think, but dungeons/combat and human type enemies was lacking and thats the reason the game isn't quite as good as it could of been, and what the one guy said about, oh they don't want to have too many human type encounters because we would get the loot, thats a bad game philosphy and it kinda backfired on em, also they made the game end after the main quest so that plus the lack of combat kept new vegas from being a 9.0 rated game instead of a 7.5 rated game. it just needed a little more combat. i don't even run into hardly any ceasers legion, lol its like they aren't even in the game hardly, i can cruise all over the map and not run into any of em, in FO3 i was running into enclave everywhere., that was fun, and lots of supermutants, now they didn't have to make enclave or supermutants but some other human type enemies need to fill that void, and ceasers legion are really only in a few lousy locations, like their base on the hill, thats not really even part of the main map, its all closed in and not really fun to fight there, no sniping etc its mostly all close range combat, and cottoncove or whatever, once you kill em their they don't respawn, they needed to have some decent amount of ceasers legion patrols crusing around the map.

Definitely more enemy spawns for fiends, vipers, and jackals, also more assassins from the factions that vilify you, and stronger enemies except death claws, cazadors, and high ranking members of select factions.

It is quite funny. Fallout 3 had more fighting, and less quests/stories. Fallout: New Vegas has more quests and very good stories, but battles and enemies are lacking A LOT. So it is very natural to want the opposite that was wanted for Fallout 3; what was hated about Fallout 3, DLC-wise.

Here's an idea: Another optional mode like hardcoe Mode. Except instead of altering the gameplay itself, it'll just add more enemies in areas, more encounters with enemies, and tougher versions of enemies (both in general and level-matched enemies). It could be something like:

Brass Mode-

"When Brass Mode is on, enemies will increase in numbers and and strength in many areas. Patrols of all kinds will walk certain roads. More animals will hunt. Random, leveled enemies will appear in certain areas. Some empty spaces will now be occupied by certain groups of factions. Tougher enemies will have a chance of appearing at higher levels. All enemies have a chance of having better gear when encountered. Recommended for those who want more combat and want it tougher. Can be turned on or off anytime during gameplay."

Probably not a perfect idea, but it's a compromise for those who want this, and those who do not. This can also help re-introduce SM Overlords (don't know if they're East Coast exclusive) and Albino Scorpions. Plus this can help increase the rate at which Deathclaw Mothers and Alphas appear. NPC's that usually have mediocre weapons and armor could now have more rare armor worth fighting over. The roads will no longer be boring long walks with little to nothing happening.

One of the things i love about the game is that it's not just a repetitive and un-atmospheric combat fest the way Fo3 was. It's more focussed on creating an experience than throwing lots of stuff at you to keep your trigger finger flinching and keep you from getting bored. Which had the opposite effect as yet another battle, 30 seconds after the last one, quickly became exhausting. That it was usually a respawn and that it was a wildly inappropriate beast for the area just added to the increasing feeling of pointless of the combat and the game. I can't believe people actually want a return to that whack-a-mole style of gameplay and especially one where zoning doesn't matter. it would go against everything NV represents as an experience. Do they not care about world integrity and the roleplaying aspects?

I like the idea for (contained) areas of combat being added through DLC. For a start they wouldn't break the, imo, excellent flow and progression of the game and would provide fun challenges for maxed chars. A perk that increases spawns (much like the mod that does this) would mix things up for people who've already played the game and just want to blow s**t up. I really like that idea.

Add more combat to the base game? People will just complain *more* about how they get to level 30 too fast. Then there's complaining about the level cap. Then there are these asinine suggestions that xp be gained at HALF the rate. And all kinds of [censored]ing about all kinds of things related to leveling in general.

And then all that complaining would be followed by more complaining: the random spawns are too strong, random spawns aren't strong enough, random spawns die too fast, random spawns don't die fast enough, random spawns give too much xp, random spawns don't give enough xp, random spawns happen too frequently, random spawns don't happen frequently enough, random spawns don't drop what I think they should drop, random spawns drop game-breaking gear, random spawns happen in stupid places, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc

Just say "NO" to more combat in the base game.

new vegas only got a 7.5 game score on game spot, FO3 has like a 9.0 thats a big difference for a game, the lack of combat in new vegas is the reason why its not as popular a game as fallout 3 was, so obsidian needs to learn a lesson from this or they won't be making another fallout game. new vegas should of blown away FO3 but it didn't, even with all the improvements to skill//special/perk system, more quests etc, it still only got a 7.5 game score, thats pretty low actually for a bethesda game, bethesda games are super high rated, look at any of em, fallout 3, oblivian, morrowind etc, so new vegas is a good game but it is slightly below bethesda standards and the game does not have a high game rating and thats a problem, i can guarantee you the new elder scrolls game and fallout 4 will have more combat and will be vastly superior, so new vegas could of surpassed a lot of other games but the lack of combat and lack of dungeons was the downfall. :spotted owl:

Well, a crapload of combat =/= Great game.
Just cause it plays out in FPP and we use guns to kill stuff doesn't mean it's an FPS first.
Obsidian realized that and focused on the RPG bits more.

So on this subject I'm kinda on the fence on where to place myself.
I want more challenging enemies but I don't want Fallout 3's awful "enemy every 30 meters".

But more combat and dungeons does not mean better game or better Fallout game for that matter.

[edit]
Honestly, there's no easy fix, either they need to re-tweak the entire game or they need to listen to my suggestion about hardcoe Mode+1 or Extreme Mode in order to make the difficulty more satisfying.
If they don't then the game will keep going in Fallout 3's tracks of us being demi-gods.
Maybe not quite as much demi-gods as in Fallout 3 but demi-gods non the less.

Gamespot rating is rubbish as is any arbitrary, bought and paid for review site's. What matters is how good the game is and in my subjective opinion NV is far, far better than Fo3 in every way. Bringing up reviews as definitive quantifiers of a game's quality is just pointless.

You do seem to have a bit of a misunderstanding about what sort of game Fallout is as you seem to be basing your opinion on Fo3 (and maybe tactics). It's not a "combat oriented game" at all. It's an RPG with combat in it. Maybe Obsidian saw themselves as making a sequel to Fallouts 1 and 2 rather than to 3. certainly the game references a lot more lore from those games and is set geographically closer. I can't really understand the desire to shoot more stuff. There's so many games that do FP combat better but few that try to create an immersive playing experience. Why taint this one with lots of 'splodes.

Lacked combat for a Fallout/Bethesda RPG?
It's an Obsidian (AKA New Black Isle) RPG and honestly, the older games mostly had combat in random encounters which weren't all that much either.
And dungeons weren't a part of Fallout until Fallout 3 came along so that there is less dungeons is in now way making it a worse Fallout title.
Maybe a worse Bethesda title but again, this isn't a Bethesda title.

i know obsidian put a lot of effort in other things and that part is awsome, the casinos etc, but the vast majority of people wanted more combat and the game rating suffered quite a bit, the skill/special/perk system was improved over fallout 3, npc's and dialogue were greatly improved and it still is only rated a 7.5 at gamespot and deservingly so, it should of blown FO3 out of the water.

Vast majority of people wanted combat..
I guess that's cause they changed it from isometric turn-based to FPP format therefor confusing regular FPS players looking for a new title where they just shoot stuff.
Their own fault for not actually looking up what Fallout is and just expecting a bunch of epic shoot-outs cause it's gameplay is in FPP format.

But it doesn't, i ain't too worried, bethesda makes great games and fallout 4 and ESV 5 will make up for the lack of combat in new vegas.

Hopefully they put focus on the RPG elements as well.
I don't mind combat but if it's foundation is shooting stuff then it get's stale really fast to me. :(

And no an rpg doesn't havte to be all combat ok, but with all the new weapons and combat perks etc, there does need to be sufficient enemies to tangle with especially human type enemies, shooting back. thats fun.

Hmm, what if at one point in the main quest Powder Gangers spread out a bit more? And start to wear grenade rifles, grenade launchers and incendiary grenades?
Or that Fiends maybe raided some caravan at a certain point in the game, upgrading their equipment?
Could work.

Fallout is a combat oriented game.

Nope, it has combat as a viable solution to get out of tight spots and completing certain quests, but a lot of other quests require some though and some don't even require one animal/insect/humanoid dying.
It's older titles were mostly focusing on quest solving where combat was an optional way to end a quest.
Except for Tactics of course which was mostly "kill them [censored]es".

It needs more combat, it doens't have to be all combat, but it was lacking in combat bigtime, for the size of the map, yeah it needed more combat. so obsidian dropped the ball in this category, they hit a home run in many other categories, they did a good job, but they didn't surpass FO3 by much if at all, and they should of , they knew all the things people loved from FO3 anbd all the things people didn't like from FO3 and they dind't completely capitolize on that, and because of that the game isn't quite as good as it could of easily been.

From what I recall a lot of us were pissed off that there were enemies every 30 meters and the game was cut down to dungeon crawling.
I think they actually made up for the scarcity of enemies by having them in larges groups. (Hordes)
In Fallout 3 they mostly had like 1 to 3 radscorpions at the same place with 3 being kinda rare for me.
While in New Vegas whenever I meet radscorpions I encounter at least 5 of them.

My problem isn't that there isn't enough combat in Vegas, but that what combat there is starts to get ridiculous at lvl 15 and pathetic at lvl 20.

I think the numbers of enemies are fine really, could use "some" more at certain places though.

the rating at gamespot fits, even in the poll on this thread, so far 12 people want more combat at 2 people don't, lol so the rating is right, over 90% want more combat, you're only one of two people so far to vote no on more combat, so you're a minority on this and fallout new vegas in the combat department didn't do so well, in a lot of other areas is surpassed FO3 easily, but dungeon diving and good batlezones are something people want in a fallout game, so it needs a little more, i can hardly find any ceasers legion anywhere unless i travel to their fort on the hill, thats about the only spot, they're the main enemy, i should have all kinds of ceasers legions units to kill, but they aren't around.

Hopefully they put focus on the RPG elements as well.
I don't mind combat but if it's foundation is shooting stuff then it get's stale really fast to me. :(

Hmm, what if at one point in the main quest Powder Gangers spread out a bit more? And start to wear grenade rifles, grenade launchers and incendiary grenades?
Or that Fiends maybe raided some caravan at a certain point in the game, upgrading their equipment?
Could work.

I think the numbers of enemies are fine really, could use "some" more at certain places though.

i agree with you, i didn't like having to fight somthing every 15 seconds like in FO3, i agree, all i'm saying is there should of been a bit more, a few more random patrols etc, maybe a few more places along the main roads, some minor tweaking, but its true in FO3 there prob was a bit much in certain areas however new vegas went a bit too far in the othner direction, they can fix this to some degree in dlc, as we level up the there needs to be some adjustments, its prob fine for how it is for tyhe first 10 levels lets say, but once i have all my cool weapons and skills and perks, i should be able to find a bit more tough combat, instead of not finding hardly any human enemies anywhere.

I'm thinking that maybe Fiends raid a Van Graff caravan and get some greater EW at lvl 24+.
Maybe BOS patrols start rolling out into Hidden Valleys, REPCONN's and Novac's area after completing their quests and one can back stab them and make them into enemies.
Legionnaires should start to get better and show up on more parts of the southern map after completing the first main quest after getting the platinum chup..
Veteran Ranger squads moving around NCR protected areas after getting the platinum chip..
Scorpions start to appear here and there in Vegas' surrounding ruins at lvl 18+.
Powder Gangers move around the middle area of the map a lot more and upgrade their weaponry thanks to their sulfur mine at that vault when the player reaches lvl 12+.
Maybe After completing Crazy Crazy Crazy super mutants will migrate to the north-eastern portion of the map and the southern ruins of Vegas.
Have Khans move around the western side of Vegas once the player reaches lvl 20.

Yeah a lot of things could be done in order to increase the humanoid encounters.
Really hope they do something like this.
All encounters right now are completely static, which while they were interesting the first time they become incredibly predictable after the 1st playthrough.
