No More NVIDIA Ambient Occlusion?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 11:47 am

Before the 1.5 update (including the beta) I was using ambient occlusion via the NVIDIA control panel for my NVIDIA card. However, since the beta update there hasn't been any trace ambient occlusion in Skyrim! Is this just another glitch or are they going to leave it out forever?

I started playing Skyrim again yesterday. I got a new gtx680.
I updated Skryim to 1.5, installed high-res texture pack. Of course I had installed the latest nvidia driver.

I messed around a lot with ENBSeries and other "injectors". SSOA via enbseries definitely works. Both quality and performance mode. I can see the difference in the shadows. And I could notice the difference in fps-loss.

In the end, I decided to not use ENBSeries or any of it derivatives.
I create a "warm color" via the nvidia "Digital Vibrance" setting.
I don't like Depth of Field at all. I don't care much about sharpening.
All the pre-defined tweak settings made the night too dark. And the day too bright (so I couldn't just change my gamma settings).
I enabled SSOA (quality) via the control panel.
8xMSAA in game. 4xSSAA Transparency via the control panel. 16xAF. High-res textures. Ultra settings.

The game looks awesome.
Even though I have only a E8500 (Ivy Bridge coming in 6 weeks), my framerates are pretty good.
I am really happy with my gtx680.

Best looking game ever, by far.

Ah lucky, are you sure you can actually see the SSAO without the ENB enhancement? Oh and just curious, what kind of frame rates are you getting with the 680?

Same here. SSAO is not working after the latest update. No matter what I set it to, the effect (and associated performance hit) is missing.

What was the point of this post? Had nothing to do with the issue of no Ambient Occlusion.

Ambient Occlusion works for me on interiors, but doesn't work out in the world's exterior - GTX460 SLI here. If I had to guess, I'd think something they did when implementing shadows on grass broke the exterior AO. The grass on the shadows look fairly nice - with little to no performance penalty on my rig - but you barely ever see them when playing in first person mode, so I'd rather have AO back.

This was noticed in the beta. Gstaff http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1358834-nvidia-ambient-occlusion-no-longer-works/page__view__findpost__p__20499534, which would indicate that it was not expected that 1.5 would break ambient occlusion on 1.5.24. When there aren't plans to fix something, Gstaff usually makes it http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1358739-kill-cam-toggle/page__view__findpost__p__20514349, so the fact that he asked for diagnostic information seems to support the probability of a fix in a future patch. This is a relatively minor issue, particularly since AO isn't officially supported by the game (or else it would be an option in the launcher), so it was probably deemed unnecessary to delay the release of 1.5 for it.

That's great to hear! Does anyone know if the latest beta patch (1.5.26) fixed it?

It doesn't appear to be, but then it isn't mentioned in the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1361627-beta-update-1526/page__view__findpost__p__20539688, so I wasn't expecting it to be fixed yet.

What was the point of this post? Had nothing to do with the issue of no Ambient Occlusion.

I reported that SSAO was working on my system.
I got my gtx680 last Saturday. I re-installed Skryim. I hadn't played for 2 months.
I checked all the graphics options. I could clearly see a difference between SSAO and no SSAO.

However ....
Today I thought my Skyrim suddenly didn't look so good. Something with the shadows.
Now it seems SSAO is not working on my system anymore as well !
Very weird.
I have not changed any (graphics) settings over the last 3 days. Still using 301.10 WHQL.
Steam hasn't touch my Skyrim (still 1.5.24.0).
But somehow, my system decided to not do SSAO anymore.

SSAO For Skyrim has always been bugged for me, this video here shows the exact problem I'm having when applying SSAO in game. (Not my vid btw)

1.5 Seems to have made the problem worse though, NVIDIA said they are investigating this problem so we could possibly see a fix from either NVIDIA or Bethesda.

Ive found that 0x00000029 (Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim) SSAO compatibility works well when iBlurDeferredShadowMask is "0" in SkyrimPrefs. (indoors and outdoors). So when you set this mask under "0", outdoors SSAO completely disappears.

But, trees self-shadows became ugly at a distant because of sharp shadows.
The problem of Fallout 3 or MW compatibilities is that Skyrim's - have more performance and may be better quality.

SSAO works in some indoor areas even after the 1.5 patch, but it's broken in some dungeons/caves and outdoors.
I just leave it disabled since the performance hit is apparent even when SSAO isn't doing anything at all.

I've tried the latest 301.24 Beta Drivers for my GTX460 but they made no difference.

DId you try to set iBlurDeferredShadowMask=0 with SSAO? It should work everywhere while it "0".

No - I prefer the smooth shadows over SSAO.. of course it would be even better if I could have both...

That's so strange. I have the same card and the new beta drivers did fix AO on my system. If it makes a difference, I do set AO to high quality with nvidia inspector.

They are beta, so it would seem nvidia is working on fixing it for everyone.

Are you sure it works everywhere? Outside, rocks, tree stumps and even grass are supposed to cast their own "shadow" on the ground, which looks very different from the shadow maps Skyrim uses for regular shadows. It's quite subtle though, and it's easy to mistake one of the regular Skyrim shadows for a SSAO shadow - some grass casts shadows even with AO disabled.

Inside, in inns, cavaes etc., SSAO works fine for me most of the time.

Dwemer ruins, inns, my homes, caves, all yes. Noticed difference between 296 and 301 instantly.

Not sure about the grass though. I know 1.5 added grass shadows, but i haven't noticed them. I guess I should go find some screenshots.

the best way to tell if AO is working out side is the shield if you have one go into 3rd person and there should be a dark shadoww inbetween your arm and the shield

Just checked it in nvidia inspector and it is.

Have you tried the new beta drivers?

@http://www.gamesas.com/user/739724-gryz/,
I started playing Skyrim again yesterday.

Exactly what was the point??

There are hundreds of post about Skyrim's current SSAO. Its been broken since the 1.5 update. As far as I know the only profiles that work 100% are Fallout3 & Oblivion through nVidia Inspector.

@ Sumrs,
DId you try to set iBlurDeferredShadowMask=0 with SSAO? It should work everywhere while it "0".
Interesting, I never knew/tried that, it works for me to some degree but the SSAO still flickers in outdoor environments unfortunately :(
