which faction offers the most lucrative quests? i'm thinking of joining the thieves guild or dark brotherhood to finance magic (i guess one could call it my tuition for the college of winterhold.... ha)

DB is my favorite. It is not incredibly long (though much longer than Companions and College), but the fact that it starts off so uniquely and begins how you would normally think then shoots off to this huge plot is awesome. I have only done it once, but it is my favorite quest line in Skyrim.

Brotherhood has one quest that nets you 20,000 gold.

Definately the Dark Brotherhood, though you can make some decent money in the Thieves Guild as well.

I don't know what level you're at but once past about lvl15 I didn't ever have any gold issues, indeed had too much of it.

seriously? im level 24 and scrapping for it. I'm not using any exploits, though.
edit: ...which is intentional. trying to rp and get gold through actual work. i figure db will be most interesting and profitable.

Do some dungeon crawling and you'll understand why it is so easy to make money. No exploits are needed. Personally I find the¨Nordic Burrows to be filled with valuable treasures.

right but the whole point was to avoid dungeon crawling and just do faction jobs because they tend to be easier...

Understandable. I simply pointed out why many people think it is so easy to make money.

Try buying mage staffs and spells at lvl 26 while dungeon crawling.

Yeah my character Helios is a poor mage.

And sadly Rashir Nashida my assassin kind of thief is to rich because of the thieves and the dark brotherhood. And he has to much junk. To many diamonds and flawless rubies. And yet no one has enough gold to buy it and the thing is then he has to much gold again.

When it comes to looting and getting gold I RP, by this I mean I never loot weapons or armor as it would be impossible for someone to fight carrying ten maces or three steel cuirasses, and I only ever carry ten potions as this is all one could fit in the tiny satchel that appears on banded iron armor, and i carry a maximum amount of 20 gems, as these i can tuck away in my clothes and armor. anything else i don;t take as it would unrealistic to fight and carry it, though if i find an expensive staff i take it as theoretically i could carry at least one staff on my back without it hindering combat too much.

But thats like taking a very role-playing approach to things and i have just enough money to live, i.e buying food and renting rooms at taverns and enough money to put aside to save up for the house at whiterun.

On my other characters where i dont try to rp so much and just play my gold numbers in the tens of thousands, like many other players im sure.

I actually haven't done the Thieves Guild yet, haven't really made a theif char. But the DB was simply incredible. I highly recommend being best friends with Cicero :)

If you can stand the grind, do the Jobs for Delvin and Vex. To max out the trophy case requires you to do 125 missions for them, earning 500 gold each time. That's 62,500 right there. Plus if you do "No Stone Unturned" you'll be drowning in gems by night's end.

I'd say Dark Brotherhood or Thieves Guild if your looking for coin. The College is more focused on Research & the Companions isnt as Gold focused as the first two.

Mages are hella expensive, so I decided to get some coin from the DB. Not bad, since the first set of contracts net you soemthing like 500 gold each and then my first job got me 800 plus a nice alchemy ring. Of course I'm not making any money off this, it's all going towards magic T_T

Personally.. I find the Companions questline to be the longest guild-based questline in the entire game. It's pretty fun to do though. Probably the reason it's better than most in my opinion is because they use less loading screens. :P

Eh eh..i agree. Its like a funny pet at the end; and he's totally out of his mind too.

Spoiler
and you'll have even the great Lucien Lechance at some point; hearin' him and Cicero spokin' their dialogues together is priceless  even if you risk to goin' insane after a while

However,Db and Thieves Guild are the most convenient in this regard, but don't underestimate the College too.

Spoiler
the Tolfdir quests when you become archmage are particularly rewarding (Magic Anomalies - if this is not a bug of course) and searching for books and Shalidor's Insight for the Orc is challenging; not to talk of the various Ritual Spells that gives you even more Spells to use at high levels
