Motion Sickness

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:44 am

I havent gotten far in skyrim, I dont think. So I cant really make an adequate opinion about it (except for the weird...shadow bugs. Seriously, let us turn shadows off if you cant make them stop forming flannel patterns.) The trouble is, including the thing i just menitoned, motion sickness. Granted I have panic problems and nausea problems but this game is more jarring on me than playing Star Fox on my 3DS. And thats a jarring experience!

Are there settings or somethnig to reduce this..? Im new to this sensation and it really botheres me, but limits my plaiyng of just this one game to 15 minutse. I shouldnt have to go play morrowind or oblivion while im waiting for my skyrim dizziness to go down! ANy help would be appreciated.

The only thing i could suggest is maybe if your playing the pc version turn your graphics down some that may help....or if your playing on xbox or ps3 try playing in third person. Otherwise you may just have to take something for nausea in advance before playing.

Sit further away from the screen. Close proximity to moving objects on screen increases the sickness effect.

That wouldn't do much turning up your FOV on PC is most likely the best solution.

But if your on consoles depending on your TV should judge your distance from it every 6inches =1 foot you should sit away for example 42' I have I sit comfortably at ~6-7ft fine. While at my 24' In my room i sit 4ft on most games and due to the small FOV on console games sitting any closer would give me headachs.

FOV is one important factor if you get motion sickness, especially on the PC because developers set it too low about 60 and 60 is very bad for PC monitors. I recommend 75 FOV and above, I use 85.

I find anything above 75 to turn fish-eyed however. Experiment with what you prefer, try the highest setting but without you seeing any noticeable "fish eye" lens.

in my country such problems are solved during childhood with mental and physical abuse from family/friends/and pretty much everyone :D

so i will say man up and get over it,

BUTTTTTT here we have bigger problems than phobias and "anxiety" over nothing, so don't listen to me :P

you should probably w8 for a mod OR try 3rd person view

I tried playing half life two on Xbox the other month. Couldn't even get as far as getting a weapon because of the motion sickness.
I can't play portal for more than an hour because of the motion sickness.

Never had this With skyrim. And I can say I ave a bad problem

It's different from person to person yes. I get travel sickness even at my age but never when playing games.

I was in the same boat and was able to save my game by changing the FOV to 90, using http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1450 and altering my shadow settings in my ini. I use the settings from http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=198.

With the default FOV (which is too low!) I felt disoriented and dizzy when playing which I can't recall has happened with any other game for me.
FOV at 80 seems to be sweet-spot for me right now, at 75 I still feel it.
It might actually be the mace weapons I use, they sway from side to side and are rather close to the screen.

Bethesda isn't going to cater to every medical problem in the book just so everyone on the planet can be comfortable while playing this game. Try sitting farther back from the screen, and see if lighting in the room you're playing in has any effect. Try playing with the lights on, then off and see what's better.

Developers set it to 60 because that's what console gamers use, sometimes even lower(for performance as well). It's nice to have a slider in PC games because we sit close the screen and 60 degree FOV removes your peripheral vision off the screen like a tunnel effect, which is not good for your eyes at all.

This helps a ton. One of the very first mods I installed. I use it along with fov 80. Also, keeping fps at a more constant rate helps. I used a graphic mod to lower the overall, but even out the average fps so there's less jarring changes. Other than that, and perhaps the easiest change of all: Every once in a while, I just pause the game and look away from the screen, focusing at a distant point across the room. Re-focus eyes, blink, then return to game.

I get sick trying to navigate small spaces such as the Hall of Countenance looking for certain people. I play on the Xbox, and I'm pretty sure it's the low FOV.
