Mounted Combat: I like it, thoughts for the full version

Post » Mon Jul 16, 2012 8:38 am

Just downloaded the beta for version 1.6 with mounted combat. Assuming this is a work in progress here are a few thoughts for the devs...

1. Need to be able to execute non-power attacks just as quickly mounted as dismounted. I feel like my character cannot keep pace with dismounted enemies, especially if there are multiple attackers.

2. Power attacks from the horse should be more powerful than normal. I'm riding a big horse and maneuvering to hit an enemy takes time, it would help if mounted power attacks had more bite.

2. Need to be able to use at least one spell while mounted. Shouldn't be too hard just make it like the bow. I assume one hand is busy holding the reigns...

3. Some sort of dodge or perry is needed. Either a dodge where the rider can roll/shift to one side of the horse ducking arrows or dodging weapons.

4. Its hard to use archery perks if there is no first person view while riding...i.e. eagle eye.

5. Kill cinematics for mounted combat...please...

6. Ability to use some voice powers while mounted.

7. Skills menu could use a whole new mounted tree incorporating the above. Some additional thoughts on a perk tree below...

- Duel wielding from horse. Simultaneous and/or sequential attacks to the left and right.
- Knock down ability for horse. I'm charging through bad guys, they should be knocked down occasionally.
- Turn 180 degrees, allows rider to shoot backwards while riding away.
- Combat dismount, allows rider to roll off horse directly into combat stance or something similar.
- Horse and rider, allow for some sort of combined health effects/interaction for mount and rider while mounted.
- Trample, allows rider the ability to use trample power through "z" key to rear the horse up and knock down/hurt enemies using the horses hooves.

I played with the mounted combat for the first time today and really enjoyed it. Its got a lot of potential. Right now the most useful thing is being able to shoot bows, although as I said I really miss being able to shoot first person... One handed weapons aren't really worth it. I haven't tried using two handed weapons while mounted. If that's not enabled it really needs to be. Dawnstar doesn't appeal to me too much, though I'll probably get it at some point. I would be more interested in a well done mounted combat add on. Given the content that could be added I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for it. Other than that I look forward to participating in the beta and seeing where this goes from here. Nice work. Thanks!

P.S. Noticed the dramatically improved water and water side vegetation. Nice touch.

Turn 180 degrees, don't you mean 360.

I'm assuming 180 from the front to the back on both sides. You should have to turn all the way back around to get to the other side, its just natural.

If you can turn in a full circle, that's 360, just letting you know

I enjoy it but they need to improve it to make it easier to actually hit something while your moving. Also I wonder why you can't use magic while on a horse, I really see no reason why you can't unless it has to do with mechanics.
