2 Mouse Cursors appearing (Skyrim + Windows cursor)?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 8:42 pm

I've just recently been experiencing an odd problem in that the Windows cursor has started showing up in my screen (along with the Skyrim cursor), even though I'm playing in full-screen mode. I've searched the forums, and googled it, but have not spotted any posts reporting this. It creates problems with the Skyrim game minimizing to the desktop, and with CTD's when it happens.

Anyone else have any similar problems? And/or suggestions? I was wondering if maybe I triggered some setting

I just recently bought a new mouse and updated the drivers, so could that have caused a conflict?

I'm running the latest version of Skyrim, but do have also have a fair amount of mods loaded. I'll start removing mods one-by-one to see if I have some bug that's occuring.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance!

Can you provide a screenshot?

Also, what's running in the background? Sounds like something is interfering.

A bit more detail:
  • I'm running Win7 on a Sony Vaio laptop along with Skyrim 1.4.27.0.4
  • I have a USB-wired mouse which is operating properly according to the control panel.
  • I checked the mouse settings and see nothing configured that would seem to be a conflict for Skyrim
  • I'm not experiencing any problems with the mouse for any other apps.
Whenever I run Skyrim, I shut down all running apps (i.e. nothing showing in Windows task manager) and use GameBooster3 to power down most other background items. Here are the only things showing in my system tray:
  • MS Security Essentials
  • Nvidia Settings
  • Gamebooster 3
  • Steam
  • Sony Touchpad
I snapped a few screenshots which included both cursors, but when I opened the screenshot files, the Windows cursor does not appear! wierd.

Go to the properties for TESV.exe and click on the compatability tab. Next tick the "Disable visual themes". I had this same problem but only with the 1.4.27 patch. Hope this helps.

That appears to have worked!

Thank you very much, Nimbli! I was beginning to think that I'd need to reinstall Skyrim, suspecting a corrupted file. That was a TERRIFICALLY annoying problem because every time I'd get in a fight, the game would minimize, seemingly on every hit! It screwed up my bow mechanics and even caused a few CTD's. Geez, you've spared me hours and hours of trouble, and even after hours and hours of re-installing, I probably would've continued to have that problem!

How in the world did you ever figure out that fix? Talk about an obscure fix...

Glad I helped. :) Through complete luck I stumbled across http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2383257 thread on the steam forums a couple days ago. I'd say WoogieMonster deserved a giant cookie.

This helped me too. I've been having this problem lately. I reported on this forum about it during the beta phase of the latest patch. The solution mentioned in this thread seems to work though.

Try using Gameboost if you're not already - that can shut EVERYTHING else down, including Explorer...
