Muffle or Fortify Sneak?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:15 pm

I'm finally to the point where I've crafted and am enchanting my uber Dragonscale armor. I'm wondering which one is better for a stealthy character to enchant on a pair of boots?

I know that Muffle...well, muffles....your footsteps, but I'm wondering if it would just be better to add fortify Sneak? Any ideas?

Edit: Random follow up question, can someone confirm that fortify one-handed will still boost my attack while dual wielding daggers?

Sneak is so easy to level up I'd go with Muffle if you can find something to disenchant - I never did... I've also heard about (but haven't experienced) the Sneak glitch. I've heard if it gets to high the number resets, so it goes from 100 back to 0 or something to that effect.

I've also heard about that glitch, but UESP says it has been fixed with patch 1.3.

I have enough dragon scales and filled grand soul gems to make another pair later if I change my mind or do encounter a problem. My sneak is pretty high as you said, so muffle may be the better way to go.

The boot enchant and Muffled Movement perk each gives you 0,5 pts muffle, but I'm not sure how they stack. Together, they'll either give 0,75 or 1, but I'm guessing the latter. Having "1 muffle" or weightless armor (through perk or Steed stone) will make you completely silent.

The Silence perk may give you 1 muffle from the way it's described on the wiki, but I haven't looked into that myself.

A high sneak value can indeed "tick over" and make you worse at sneaking, so until that's fixed I would go with a Muffle enchant or resistances if you're already silent enough.

Unless you have the silent perk, muffling is always a good idea; if you arn't muffled nor silent then there is ALWAYS a chance you're going to make a sound and alert someone if you sneak-run close to them even in pitch darkness no matter how high your stealth score is.
